    It's all the same questions

There are over 190,000 members on this forum. I am member number 816.

When I started, you had to use a desktop and an inverter. Ground loops where awful. If you wanted any sort of display beyond a 4x40 character VFD display, it was going to cost you $800 for the raw LCD panel plus another $150-$200 for a controller card to make it work with a VGA graphics card.

A 20 Gig HDD was awesome.

Software discussions were basically centered around winamp and realplayer skins. I was one of the first folks to get a touchscreen. 10.4" LCD pull from a point of sale machine. $300. I used a realplayer skin and a very primitive GPS program to have something that resembled an integrated system.

Now I just use my Galaxy S3 and a bluetooth module. I still use the same stereo I used in 2002

I love living in the future.

This place was originally hobbyist only. Started by a guy named Jason Moon. He left and Zip-Lock took over. I don't remember when the commercialization happened, but I welcomed it. People make good products when there's money to be made. The holy grail was an in-dash motorized LCD Touchscreen. Looks like those are still on the "want" list.

I got out of this when I started getting out of debt. No room for toys in the budget.

So how's things? (And how the eff do I change my signature?)
    Debt as of 1/1/05: $34,354.48
Debt as of July 4, 2007: $0.00 explanation

I'm now a reasonably successful gunblogger.

              Hi Wizard!

I remember wanting to congratulate you on your out of debt story - ESPECIALLY on those wages etc! (Wot - no government bail-outs? <sarcasm intended - at gov't & business, NOT you!!> )
I don't think I ever did, so please take it now. Truly admirable!!

As to your car-pc saga, I could mention I remember the first 5M HDD... I can't recall if it was marketed as MMMMMCCXLMMDCCCLXXX bytes (LOL!)...
But OMG! - the pioneers that were so dedicated. Inverters, etc. (At least we were beyond valve technology, except for EMP proofing.)

And look at it now - chip-erized dc (SMPS) converters, compact hi-res touch screens, etc. No more 7400-series chips in an "IBM compatible" PC nor Hercules cards to enable graphics to co-exist(?) with text (an issue I never understood!).

You guys even surpassed Star Trek. Their communicators didn't have color screens or web access.

                Long gone.
Haven't seen him in years, honestly.

The old guard is mostly history.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
                How about the Wiki?

First question - are you still out of debt?

Once I installed the iPad I suddenly had no reason to tinker with a PC, either.

I've been on and off over the years. This forum has def died since about 2008-09. I think it's when MP3Car became so commercialized. I know that's when I stopped coming on, when it was all about CF and Streetdeck.

                        It kinda turned me off.
