  • Start/Stop the engine with a button

Some of the new Mercedes models have a very nice feature, that I'd like to have on my Escort: when you get within 1m of your car, the doors unlock. You get further away than 1m the doors lock. You enter the car, you press one button, the car starts, you press it again the car stops. Now, the trick is, you don't even have to get the remote out of your pocket.
As I said, I'd like this feature on my Ford Escort, so is it doable? Now, if this community was able to put computers in cars, this should be pretty easy...

yeah its well easy. You just need some kind of transponder like those PC locks that unlock your PC when you are near but i would go with a standalone device. Don't that phigit place do rf tags things. you want something like that but longer range.

One concern i would have though is that car makers probably go to great lengths to make sure they use an uncommon frequency range to prevent other devices opening your car and lots of code encryption. Also i would be concerned that if the battery went flat in the device in your pocket the engine cuts out at 100 on the motorway and you ar eleft with no power steering and no brake assist. You would have to do it so the engine doesnt need the imobiliser when running but it would be cool if you could have a sensor on the gear **** to check it is in neutral and on the hand brake to enable remote start form the keypad too for those quick getaway from one of your girlfriends when she finds out you have others!

Yes, I'd like a stand alone device...not carputer related. I was thinking of using the transmiters from a car alarm. Those have jumping codes, and imobilisier.
For example, my Megane doesn't have a key. It has a card. You place the card into a slot in the dash, push a button and the car starts. But it won't start unless you press the clutch.

leave a brick on it when you go to see your girlfriend

shouldnt be too hard to make once you fnd the right transponder stuff. YOu could possibly use a paired bluetooth device with your phone. I got a broken bluetooth car that has a working bluetooth module on. just can't think of anything useful to do with it yet. maybe i should make my pug bluetooth controlled - shame it isnt an auto. i could drive it dwont he road to pick me up when its raining. hehe

I would think with a rf-id system that it would be really easy for the dock locking and unlocking. I am actually starting to plan it for my car. just have to convert my locks to electric.

Stupid RS been doing that to me recently too!
yeah ive been thinking about this idea too, many ways of doing it i have already designed the push start button features that works great as for depressing the clutch to start first that could most prossibly be easiily by-passed proberly only a switch (push to break) of some sort like found on brake pedals for the rear lights.
so far i have considered Proximity, RF, and ultrasonic. Proximity is promising as the range is much more gauranteed, RF is always a little too sensitive to gaurantee a standard range. but im thinking a small rf alarm style case (maplins) with a small proximity or rf transponder in side, most proberly 433mhx code hopping is a necassary

I just want to make sure I'm being understood: I want a remote I won't eve use...I mean, the car senses the remote and unlocks the door. I don't even want to get the thing out of my pocket...
As for the clutch, you can't start the car unless it's pressed, wich is a good thing...

I know what you mean Cris - i got your drift dude.

Thats why you want some kind of transpoder/proximity device. I can get loads of secure RF with buttons but they ar enot what you want for the door opening but you will need a button for remote start outside the car if you want it. The tansponder system is liek what your car kesys have with the coil in the steering column. The one on RS only has a range of 1/2 metre which is not good enough as you would want to put it in the door for max external range which could mean unreliable signal in the car. you want about 1-2 metre range with the coil in the car. a bit of a on should find you a decent transponder - hehe then get yourself a honda s2000 start button and a few more dials for your dash!

I Know I Know its coming alone slowly but surely

Cris - i know exactly what you want Just like on the Mercs you wont need to press any buttons or anything just walk near the car and it will unlock
this could work in a number of ways the car could permantly hail the transmitter and when in range the transmitter could respond back hence unlocking the doors, key in ignition, engine start and system would stop hailing stops battery going falt in both (car and keyfob) advanatages would work further away than proximity, system could beep or flash lights on car to inform you of unlcoking state, disadvantages would be keyfob tansponder would need a reciever as well as a transmitter. where as with a proximity this isnt needed alas range is seriously defected.
