  • HOw did you go about building your carputer?

I know a lot of peoples sigs and even when they post thier finsihed product, many say like, "well i have been slowly building it for a year now and i finally got it done".

How do you guys have the patience to wait that long? When I got the idea to put one in my car, I ordered all the parts at once and even waiting those 4 days for shipping was hard for me..

So IM just wondering what the conseus is here. Do more people take the fast track, or do more build it slowly always waiting for the very very very best deal (even if its only 2 dollars cheaper) on a part before buying it.

I dont know about everyone else, but for the most part I try to use whatever I have untill I can get the correct parts.

most the time i'm not waiting for the best deal, it's waiting for the best part for the job

it's killing me right now driving around without my carputer, but I cant do anything untill I get the correct parts

but I still understand waiting for the UPS guy with baited breath

Easy - i dont have the money to build t all at once and i am waiting for the right parts too - like a decent touchscreen i can see in the daylight. I am also developing hardware to link with stuff and for control. But researching stuff takes time and i waste time on the forum while i am doing that research - + i watch everything going on here so when i get round to stuff like GPS and phone stuff i have a good idea of what i need to do and what people have done and what is coming (like baggers mappping stuff).

I wish i could go out and order a new mobo and cpu and opus but i can't. So i wait and plan.

well i thought of all that i wanted after reading then bought the first things that i could use to test it out. Then i waited because the freakin thing is expensive. I never measured any thing, i just do it all in my head. It all worked out perfectly. I changed my ideas manytimes while waiting for the parts. So dont get stuck with one way of doing it because i have a feeling your ideas will change. good luck

See with me, i just need to have the stuff in my hands. Even if I wasnt able to install it in my car yet, just having it in my possesion is half the battle.

I forgot to add, I spent (not joking) 5 hours a day, for like 2 weeks working on my computer outside in my car. Not installing it, troubleshooting. I still dont know the exact cause, but my first mobo would run for so long on DC power and then it would just shutdown. On AC power it was usally fine, ocassionlyy i would shutdown after extended periods of time, but on DC every like minute it would shutdown. I wish I had picture, i had my fullscreen desktop monitor sitting out in my driveway along with ac cords running into the house.

its all about the benjamins baby

imo, if everyone was rich they wouldnt wait more than one weekend, unless they wanted to plan one weekend and go at it the next.
Go on and do it, do it, Do it 'til you're satisfied,
Whatever it is, do it, Do it 'til you're satisfied.

I took my time because I didnt want to screw anything up and having never done this before I was a nervous nancy taking my car apart and trying to put a PC in there.

But it was torture the whole time waiting and seeing it slowly come together. Mine took about 8 months total.

nah, when i order my aston martin i will get the Aston martin special projects section to fit me a PC not the normal satnav system. It will be the best of the best and will have a custom made aston martin skin! bling!

I found some nice mobos today, got the specs from the place. They measure 3.5" width and run on P4 mobiles (up to 1.8ghz) with usb2 and dual output intel extreme 2 graphics! - not cheap though but they do run on 5v.

Spent about 3 months reading posts practically 24X7. Assembled the initial list of parts just to get me going and ordered them. Then I realized all the stuff I had forgotten or hadn't worked out. Ended up doing a multiple item order about 6 weeks later.

Spent about 2 months getting the system installed, but most of that was crafting the screen mechanism.

I don't have to "have" the parts in hand but I agree, once you've got them it's much easier to work out the details.
