I love how the title for the auction is just "1970 Chevrolet : Nova" without ANY indication of the modifications...I mean, doesn't he want to at least TRY to get some other crazy person to buy it?

That's awesome. A friend sent the link to me this morning because they know I'm planning on building a tank with my father in law.

Hell yeah. My FiL is handling most of the powertrain issues, we're both trying to design a good transmission setup that'll let us do more then just skid steer, and I'm in sole charge of the drive by wire system. It's a few years off, we've started the design over a few times, and it's on the back burner now, but every couple days, one of us sees something or technique and tries to fit it into a tank-shaped hole in our minds. Basic reference design we have at the moment requires two engines (which we already have), Ford 4 cylinders, one for each side, along with an automatic transmission for each side, controlled via heavy duty servo/pneumatic shifter. We WANT to ditch the two engine setup for a single V8 or V6 for weight/width, but the transmission of power is tricky. At one point, we even considered using a beefy differential and just using skid steering, but... I dunno, not maneuverable enough.

We've examined Oregon law, and it looks like it'll be possible to make it street legal, and that's a design goal. My personal goal is to design and build a working drive-by-wire system, completely closed in driver compartment with cameras for vision, and to make it street legal. He wants something that'll zip around the dunes, have fun in mud, and so on. Our goals are compatible.

It'll be a Bolo Mk II or III, for those of you who recognize the nomenclature.

I looked at a cool looking tank like thing at a construction site
one time ,and asked what type of motor it had - the guy said no motor
                  - it uses a generator and electronic motors drive the tank treads
might be something to look into

I actually wrote up a short little thing on the value of hybrid tanks a few months ago:

                    http://hallert.net/misc/futurewar.htm

Cool stuff, and it'll definately be how the MBTs of the near future are built, but kind (by kind I mean REALLY) outta reach of a hobbyist budget. I want to be able to drive to work in this thing, not just back out of my driveway until I have to start and recharge.

That thing is cool. I can just imagine someone taking the family on a picnic up a glacier! hehe

One problem though.....he didnt offer to get it down off the container for the winner....i wonder if this is extra?
