  • Emotional after a build?

Before I get flamed let me explain:

The carpc dream started for me about 5 years ago while working at a summer job. Back then this hobby was only for the geekiest geeks and my projects mainly consisted of small din sized boxes with a 4 x 20 char 2 color LCD that only played mp3's to a laptop connected to my audio system via rca wires with custom written mp3 software.

I had visions back then on what the future holds for car pc's which included: wireless web, audio, video and gps. I came up with a new idea faster than I could impliment my current idea. Of course I ran into much adversity because there was never the right hardware or software to make my ideas come true. I was stuck by inventing the stuff myself which of course was quite time consuming.

As time passed and my efforts increased to make my masterful vision come true I hit many road blocks going through 4 girlfriends (one my now fiencee), dealing with lack of software and hardware support, lack of money, always breaking something and waiting for new parts ect. and two jobs. My dream at some points seemed like it would never come true and I almost gave up a handful of times.

During some of my "breaks" my components lay on the workbench untouched for weeks collecting dust. Yet I always had the dream in the back of my mind and no matter how hard I tried I simply couldn't forget about it. It was as if the hobby was, no lie, calling to me.

Time passed and some days I'd make groundbreaking progress and other times for weeks or even months I'd be stuck on something either software or hardware related and I'd contemplate giving up. I never gave up and just pressed on trying not to look back on the LONG bumpy road.

After endless small to large problems across years of troubleshooting and designing I finished tonight my 3rd project build which is extremely close to the dream I've had for 5 years now. This build got me a bit emotional because it so close to my original dreams and the adversity I went through to get to this point was simply unimaginable.

My final test, was on the mp3player which was set to play random songs. The player chose to play Tom Petty - Running Down a Dream. As I cranked the music up to hear no distortion and just sit back and enjoy my half a decade of work I began to smile then tear up a bit.

To conclude, I hope that my contributions here have helped those new commers here to a point where most of the problems I've faced over the years are avoided. Thanks to those who have documented thier work and offered me assistance over the years. Look for my project "05 Tacoma" on the finished projects thread soon! I've "completed" 2 other projects but never felt they were worthy enough to post images of. This setup I believe is and I hope that you enjoy it.

My projects includes (most of this in my sig.):

-Win XP pro nLited with EWF + Minlogon enabled
-a 36 second average boot time
-OS is on a Compact flash card
-Intelligent shell that launches either explorer or my front end when needed
    - 4 port distro block with 3 ports switched from ign and 1 siwtch with ign w/ manual kill switch. 3 switched ports are for screen,xm, and an aux for future upgrade.
    - Custom fabricated Bezel with 7" touch Xenarc
    - OEM Embedded GPS engine and super tiny antenna
    - Whole system integrated into center console looks OEM.
Progress [I will seriously never be done!]
    Via EPIA MII
    512MB RAM
    OEM GPS (embedded)
    nLite WinXP pro on
    1GB Extreme III CF card
    Carnetix 1260 startup/ DC-DC regulator
Software: Still, re-Writing my existing front end in .Net

Bah anyone who flames for something like this is a n00b who hasn't built a CarPC.

Anyone who has knows there's so many things you have to go through that even small successes are so awesome, let alone a full completed install like yours.

I can't even put into words how much I went through. I mean I have a fairly complete log with well over 2000+ issues (I stopped adding a year ago)....
