  • Blargh! Scandisk and Defrag, WHY!

This is a general "I'm up too late, stressing, and windows sucks" gripe..

Why in God's name does Scandisk and Defrag take to blasted long! I mean come on, yesterday I ran Defrag from 3PM till 7:30PM and I got ****ed and closed it, at 60%!

Scandisk isn't much better... Pffft Windows... Is there anything better third party that could be used instead?

    Pfffft...

    A. Get win2000 running and it will go much faster (newer version of Defrag is much better than old crappy thing - takes me like 5 mins max after a good month w/o defraging)

    B. Defrag more often and you wont run into the problem (do after any major file moving).

    C. Hit Ctrl + Alt + Del and close all taskts/apps you have running...otherwise it will just keep restarting.

Scandisk just sucks. There has to be something better - check download.com

Well in both programs cases it depends on the size of your hard drive to. Don't get me wrong, I don't like either one. It takes me 10-12 hours to defrag my 24gig HD. I never have a problem with scandisk. PoBoy is right about shutting down all running apps (except explorer and systray) before running any of them. If something access the disk while one of them are running it starts over from scratch. Check out Diskeeper, I belive it is faster than Windows defragmenter.

I always boot to safe mode when I have to scan/defrag. It's the only way to get the job done, and if at all possible I boot to windows command promt to run Scandisk.

As for the drives, I got fed up with my 20G, else I have two 40's on my HUB box and a 30 on the Firebird's box as well as my graphics box. Just a real pain in the rear having to soak up time doing scan/defrag when I need to be working.

Such is life though I suppose..

Seriously?? Man I can do my 40 gig in W2k in about 5 mins (assuming I do it on a regular basis)...if not it never takes more than 30 mins. W98- always took a good while...

the defrag in win2k is much better than the old W98 proggy. I always defrag my w98 mp3car HDD whilst in my win2k box.....

as was said earlier, make sure no tasks are running in w98, or you get that 10% - restart 11% - restart..... and it will take half a day!

for other programs, try norton utils??? their speeddisk program used to be pretty good....

Don't get Norton Utilities. The whole thing just sucks, and will cause more problems than it will solve. If you are going to run a Norton program, run Norton Anti-Virus and leave it at that. None of this Crash Guard, Disk Doctor, Uninstall crap...

he he he....my freind was running all that norton crap, and the status menu said his hard drive was 97% defragged. he checked it with another defrag program, and it was so fragmented it took 2 days to defrag (there were no more than 10 blocks in a row at any point).

he unistalled all that crap, even that antivirus. then, 3 days later, he got "I Love You"
