    Harry Whittington's hospital statement
Man shot by Vice President Cheney says accidents happen

Feb. 17: Harry Whittington, the 78-year-old Texas lawyer shot by Vice President Dick Cheney, says the event brought a “cloud of misfortune and sadness.”

Harry Whittington, the man shot by Vice President Dick Cheney last weekend, spoke to reporters as he was released from Christus Spohn Memorial Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas. He did not take questions. Here is a transcript of his statement.

    Good Afternoon.

All of you in the media have been very patient in waiting for me to make my appearance here. I hope you understand. I’m sorry I delayed you, but I know your role is to get the news out to the public. I compliment you on what you’ve done. I’ve read and seen many of your reports and I know your job isn’t easy. I regret that I couldn’t have been here earlier so you could see what a lucky person I am.

For many years my family has been friends with the Armstrongs down in Kenedy County. We have visited with them for over 25 years and have had some wonderful trips and visits – pleasant memories that we cherish forever. However, this past weekend encompassed all of us in a cloud of misfortune and sadness that is not easy to explain – especially to those who are not familiar with the great sport of quail hunting.

We all assume certain risks in whatever we do, whatever activities we pursue. And regardless of how experienced, careful and dedicated we are, accidents do and will happen – and that’s what happened last Friday.

I am very grateful and want to thank all the people that remembered me in their prayers and the kindness you have extend to my family that’s been here this week.

My family and I are deeply sorry for all that vice president Cheney has had to go through this past week. We send our love and respect to them as they deal with situations that are much more serious than what we’ve had this week. And we hope that he will continue to come to Texas and seek the relaxation that he deserves.

Let me get this straight, you shoot me in the face and give me a heart attack send me to the hospital
    than I say I'm sorry.

    Riiiiiiiight

The fact is, this was 100% accident.
The VP has taken responsibility for what happened and cleared the ait with his friend and supporter, HArry Whittington, who also acknowledges that it was an accident.
I'm certain that he feels badly that, as vice-president, Cheney has to endure a lot of media-generated bull**** about the incident, and expressed that in his statement.

You're reading way too much into his statement. I think Whittington is more sorry that the media is the way it is and is trying to make something more of a simple accident.

Seriously - if my hunting partner and I were out there and the same thing happened, he'd feel like **** for what he did to me, and I'd feel like **** for all the questions he'd have to answer. Just a couple decades ago, we didn't have to worry so much about the media hype and all the law-suit happy people that we do today. If this would have happened just 20 years ago, we'd be done talking about it by now. But it's all those morons that can't think about anything but running to their lawyer *first* and their physician second that make society act the way they do.

no, i know it was an accident and it wasnt intentional

i just found it a bit funny considering everything else i mean in no other situation would a man have to appologize for such a thing.
him being a lawyer and all

I think the point that you're missing here is that he didn't have to apologize for anything. He expressed his dismay at the treatment of his friend and hunting partner (who happens to hold the office of Vice-President) by the media.

I think it rediculous that the media is still talking about this. Think about it. If I shot my friend in the face, my last concern would be to contact the media, and I could care less about who thought what. But I guess someone in his position can't do that. I think it is a personnal matter and not political, so I believe the media shouldn't even have to be told.
