  • MP3car at Hot Import Nights

I entered my MP3car in Hot Import Nights in San Mateo, CA this Saturday. Entered with my team (Praxis Racing) since we are trying to get more aftermarket support for the new Toyota Celica. The responce to my car was awesome. I had a ton of people all over my car throughout the night. They all wanted to know how I did it, how much it costs, etc. I even had people wanting to hire me to install a computer in their car. The funniest comment I got was from this guy that looked to be in his 40's. He looked at my trunk for a while and then as he's walking away, he says to his friend "it's ONLY a Pentium 2!" That really cracked me up.

It seems like most people haven't even thought of putting a computer in a car. This really suprised me considering the type of people that go to these shows. I figured that with all the different audio/visual setups these import car show people do, it would be common to see a computer in a show car by now.

Here are some pics if you're interested. My car is the Celica with the #6 on the door, and the pics at the bottom of the page are of my interior. Sorry about the speed...it's on a slow server.

Ugh, Hot Import Nights. To me, it seems more like a rice-fest.

Anyway, it's not surprising that more people have not thought about installing a computer in a car. For one thing, most don't have the knowledge. Also, the whole "import scene" seems to be about being different, but they accomplish this by making every one of their "modded" cars look exactly like the next guy/gal's. Case in point: Altezza tail lights, huge ugly aluminium wings, exhaust tips, etc. I think there's very little creativity involved. Plus, most of these people are the "bolt on" kings, as in their mods are commercially produced kits that get bolted on in place of the stock part. An MP3 player is a little different in that it requires fabrication, customization, knowledge, etc.

As far as my experience with my MP3 player in RX-7 get-togethers, it's always a big hit. My car normally attracts more attention then even some of the most heavily modded 3rd gens. I don't see why it's that big of a deal, it's just a computer in a car. *shrug* But I think the real reason is that it's different.

Car: 1986 Mazda RX-7 Turbo (highly modded), 1978 RX-7 Beater (Dead, parting out), 2001 Honda Insight
"If one more body-kitted, cut-spring-lowered, farty-exhausted Civic revs on me at an intersection, I swear I'm going to get out of my car and cram their ridiculous double-decker aluminium wing firmly up their rump."

Imports? more like a rice fest to me.My friend has a 2001 Toyota GTS got it for gradution gift from mom and dad he had a choice of any car he wanted and he pick a Toyota GTS worth about 22k at the time theres nothing special about this car and its really not worth 22k but for some odd reason he loves it? Top speed is 137mph tested,i think for 22k you should get alot more the 137mph.

They are good cars,0-60 7.3s 170hp 4cyl,front wheel drive great on ice,and doing 180's & 360's on ice,but for 20k I think the japs should throw in some more hp.

OK. Let's not get off topic here. If you want to post pictures of cars, there is a topic way far down in General Discussion for that.

And please don't take it the wrong way. I was not "ragging" on the original poster, I was ragging on those idiots that rice out otherwise decent (but not necessarily my style) cars.
