  • I got a new truck, well, used truck.

I just got back from putting 50$ down for a guy to hold his truck he had for sale for me.
a 92 Chevy S-10. It has 222,000 miles, yeah I know its alot, but I am only paying $675. Pretty good eh? Its kinda rusty, not the frame, but the body has some rust spots, I'll have to sand and paint them. Its a 5 speed, the transmission is good, it shifted and everything just fine, and when I put the E-brake on and put the car in gear it would stall. The guy who owned it smokes like a chimney, and it will need to be cleaned really well.
Heres a run down and prices guestimates of what needs to be done.
    1. Seat belt buckle is broken, used bucket seats (it currently has a bench, which I dislike). 100$ for a set? Anyone wanna comment on this?
    2. A stereo, probably a pioneer, and some decent midrange speakers, 150$
    3. Bondo and some white paint. 50ish
    4. Bed liner 75$ ?
    5. Truck cap 100$

For 675$ it was a pretty good buy in my opinion.

Umm I'm assuming that stalling was the (desired) effect? I mean when you put a manual transmission vehicle in gear without moving or giving gas, it -will- stall. right?

Have you had a chance to drive it yet? Also you need to take it to a trusted mechanic for a full tip-to-tail checkout. It's usually called a "used car inspection" and should cost about $50 for him to do it. It's WELL worth it. It'll tell you any potential problem areas that your truck will have, and probably point out the first things that need to be fixed.

That truck should have another year or two in it left. $675 isn't bad for a working vehicle.

Should I do that before or after I buy it?
I was thinking about doing that, as the last car I bought ended up breaking down right after I bought it. I kinda realized last night that even 675$ was a bit much to sink into such a high-milage vehicle, but all I need is something to get me from work to back for the next year and a half or so, then I would like to buy something a bit bigger and a little nicer for college.

Oh, yes, I forgot. You wanted the truck to stall, if it didn't, its the sign of a loose clutch and or bad transmission.

(re: clutch) Yeah, I thought so.

If you can, take it in before you buy it... it's always easier to -not- pay money than to try to get it back.

Looks like I'm not gonna have enough time to get it checked before I buy it. I'm going tommorow with my mom to buy it after school.
My reasoning is, either A. it runs great for the next few months/years and I'm happy OR B. it breaks down, I sell it to the dude who buys old cars (He runs an auction yard) for 200$, and I'm out 400$, big freakin deal, thats 2 weeks of after school work or a good weeks work in the summer. Its really no big deal to me.
And if it does break down, I get to learn how to work on cars. I've never had the time or patience to learn, but If I have a broken truck in my yard that I payed 675$ for, I will be quite tempted to mess around.
The only thing I am going to put into it is
            1. some Bondo and spray paint
and 2. a deasant stereo/speakers, which can be easily put in something else.

Good luck with the truck, but you -should- take it in anyways. That way you can fix anythign that's broken before it becomes a major breakdown (ie- broken radiator will sieze your engine if unfixed, but hard to tell by looking)

yeah, thanks man. Every mechanic around here charges 65$ to do it, but a friend of my moms knows one that will do it for 50$. I can't take the car all the way acrost town before hand though because the guy doesn't have insurance on it (he bought a new truck, and so he sold his old one).
He seems like a very reputable guy, upper low-class, just wants a little money back out of his truck. He told me he bought it for 900$ last september, used it for work travel, then a friend of his put a really nice bigger truck up for sale, so he grabbed it, and wants to use the money from this sale to pay more payments.
When I get it home, I may if I still have some money go get it looked at, but I really don't have much.
