  • My used S-10, some install Q's

    I just got my S10 home from acrost town where I bought it.
    It has 225000 miles, but I found out why. I saw the side in good light, and you can see where the name of a mechanic was painted on. So that means it was a run around fix flats kinda truck, what that means for me is that it was probably very well taken care off while they owned it.
    I drove it home on a major highway, and had it up to 75 at one point. It only has 14" wheels, I'd like to put 15" inchers on it, as the 14"s look just a bit small.
    Everything works great. I cleaned out the inside really well, and got the smoke smell almost out. I need to get some febreeze tommorow. Next saturday my grandpa is going to help me change the oil and sparkplugs on it.
    When I had it on the highway, the freakin check engine light came on, but when I got it home and restarted it, it didn't come back on, and hasn't since (I've went around town a bit with it already tonight). I think it might have been because the radiater was low on water, and it was also low on Power-steering fluid (On a side night, the mechanic I bought the Fluid from was baffled when I said I was using Dextron-3 instead of Power steering Fluid. Its what I've used on all the cars around the house, and works fine. If you look in the manual it says you can use either PS fluid or Auto-Tranny fluid).
    So, I want to mount my inverter in it, which I am going to put behind the seat. What I want to know is how do I get the wired to the battery? My last car already had a whole where the guy had put an amp in. How can I run about 6 gauge wire to the battery? Also, how can I have my inverter come on automagically when the car starts? It doesn't have day time running lights, so I can't use the +12 from them to turn on a relay, what else can I use? I really don't know that much about cars, so go into detail please.

    What year is your truck? I know on the older body style (82-93) there are grommets in the firewall just behind the brake pedal with wire run through them; that's where I have my power wire run. I'm not sure about the newer body style. After it comes through the firewall, it runs under the driver's side door trim, which comes off with a screwdriver. From there it runs into the back seat.

    One word of advice for running through the engine compartment: ZIP TIES! These things rule. It's not a good thing to slice through a dangling power wire with your fan (trust me!)

      thanks man, yeah its a 92, so that should work. do I just need to ground the inverter to the body then?

        Also, the guy I bought it from lost the key to lock the door, I just have a key to turn the ignition on and off. How much does it cost to get one made?

          as for using +12 for a relay, there is a +12 connected to the radio, in mine it is the red wire on the harness, just extend that and use it for a relay.

            ground the inverter to the body.

            as for keys, if you aren't personal friends with a locksmith, it might be cheaper to replace the lock cylinders from a junkyard. Mine cost $20, installed.

              Your truck wasn't perhaps used as a carquest delivery truck was it? I got a bedliner (not sure if I have the tailgate piece) you can have.

                Holy Crap alan, yeah, it was a carquest delivery truck, I'm pretty sure, I'll have to check, but that name sounds familiar.
                Oh, and guess what, I bought it off a guy that lives like 2 miles from you, on Meriposa, off Wenning. Are you the guy with the 4x4 body in your front yard? I think the dude pointed at your house when he took me to the BMV and said that that guy worked for him.

                  well maintained and it was low on powersterring fluid and coolant??? They didnt even check to see if these fluids were full when they were trying to sell the truck, what makes you think they ever did when they were driving it???

                    These trucks are seemingly indestructible, at least in my experience. The (ex) girlfriend drove mine for a week with no oil in it. I didn't have any engine trouble until nearly a year later, and that was caused by a rock thrown into the block while four-wheeling. I personally wouldn't worry too much about it; just keep an eye on your fluid levels.
