  • File deleting problems

I've downloaded a movie file and for some reason I cannot delete it. I've tried removing it in safe mode and states that "the file is being used by another program or user", and in the windows command prompt "file cannot be found" after I try del at prompt eventough it is visible in the directory.

I was thinkin of booting into DOS and maybe deleting the file that way from a universal boot disk since I am running XP Pro.

    Any other suggestions ?

    Re: File deleting problems

    weird......

are u logged in as the administrator for one thing?

yeah maybe try making a XP boot disk (u can get the setups from the microsoft.com site - the link is at bootdisc.com) then u can use the XP style DOS thingy to delete the file?

seems a bit extreme tho..... I once had that problem cause the filename was invalid of a file I downloaded from a filesharing service...... the filesharing app could write the filename, but explorer said it was invalid and would not allow me to delete the file!!
    Project - GAME OVER :(

Try renaming the file, and then restarting the computer. if it will let you rename, after you restart, you should have removed the dependencies to what was keeping it locked.

        Close all programs

Hit Ctrl Alt Del and close every program running along with all non-OS processes... You are probablly running a file share program in the background or something that is picking at it. You should have nothing in the bottom right next to your clock.

run "command.com"; Then "del". That usually works for me if I have a problem. Are you using FAT32 or NTFS for you file system?

A fried of mine had the same problem. He was running a bootleg of xp and I just wrote it off to that.
The problem was to basicaly due to rights. Even though he was the admin, he still had no rights to delete it. We had to go in, turn off the "Simple file sharing option" and then manually take ownership of the files, then he could do whatever he wanted to them.

It took me about 2 hours to figure it out, but that fixed him.
I never did anymore testing with the problem just because I detest XP, but it could be a bug.

              I run win2k.

              Hope that helps

Ok guys lemme give you some more light in this situation:

                - I have retail version of XP pro, not a bootleg

                - gone thru safe mode as an admin eventhough my name is the admin account

                - have tried the command prompt / com

                - ended explorer.exe from task manager and tried from the command prompt

                - hard drive is formatted NTFS

                - from what I read if you run NTFS you cannot boot into DOS

                - No proggies in background running

                - folder is not shared

                - I have no access to the file other than copying it; cut and rename do not work

And better yet I find this while searching "This file in particular seemed to give problems (does Windows Explorer like to hold .avi files open or something?)" lookie here

Thanx again for the help and hopefully I can delete this damn file, its getting annoying

PS: Thats what I get for downloading MIB II and the *****in file doesnt even play.

funny you say about the .avi locking..... I had that problem with my PC and XP last night.....

ripped the "Blow" DVD to a DivX movie in a temp directory (like I normally do, keep the VOB's, etc together) then after encoding I went to move it to my c:\DivX directory, got a sharing violation....

then I did a copy - paste of the .avi so I had a "Copy of Blow.avi" file, straight away went to copy it - sharing violation!!!! funny eh? copy a file, violations straight away!

anyway, went to command prompt, issued a few c:\move commands and all was fixed...... I then went to rename as a test some of my older encoded DivX's that I did on my old Win2K OS before I moved em to my new 80GB drive, same problem....

                  weird stuff eh?

The only time I tried to rip a DVD, I stopped it when the program said, "Only 22 hours remaining."

Do you let it run in the background, or do you have to leave your PC alone for how ever long it takes?

You sure that file isnt a porno virus?? I've "heard" about people slapping virii ontop of them. Update your V. Defense and check out that file.

I noticed you just said it was a movie file and not what movie it is. Plus you seem pretty discouraged that you cant get it off...Dont want Mom to see that!! hehehe....j/k or did I guess right??

What is the file name? I remember that you could use "ALT + 255" to hide/trick files/dirs in 95/98. But I think WinXP fixes that problem.

No, you can't boot into DOS with NTFS. Linux maybe?

I have what I consider a fairly 'beefy' processor (Duron 900Mhz) altho seeing some of the new P4 speeds I guess it aint that quick!

To encode Blow took about 6 hours 12mins according to Gordion Knot (the encoder) which is about just under 2 hours of video...
the ripping of the DVD take about 30/45 mins so u can do most movies in under 7 hours on my machine.....

I just let it ripp when I goto work for the day, and Gordion Knot can shut down the PC when finished, which is nice..... u can run it in the background but it will take ALOT longer...

I would love to try encoding on a P4 2.2Mhz, see how much quicker it would take.... would be interesting to see.....
