  • Ethernet card stops working

Hey guys, i'm having a strange problem with my home computer.

Yesterday i bought a 40gb hdd, and installed a fresh copy of winME on it, then proceeded to set up my hardware / software. I use winroute lite as a NAT server for my local network (one other windows box and a linux box) After a boot everything works fine, and i can telnet to my linux machine and all is sweet, but then after a while, the network interface on my windows machine 'dies'.

I can't ping another machine, ftp, even windows networking, it just stops. Under the device manager its all sweet. After a reboot it works fine. Any ideas? suggestions?

I am using the drivers from the manufautrer that worked fine on my old installation. :\

      Thanks for the help gutter.

All the link lights on the hub are still the same, so i dont think its the cable. But just to be sure, i replaced the cable, with both another cat 5, and also a cross-over cable (bypassing the hub all together). Still no go, after about 30 mins, the ethernet interface dies.

      .:Edit:.
I have updated the network card drivers with the latest off the web.
Also when trying to ping from the machine in question, no activity lights on the hub flash, but if i ping from another computer, there is activity at the hub.

      HELP!

Ive shot my self in the foot over soo many cables over the years, so its always the best thing to check first. Otherwise, drivers (which you said you updated), configs for the drivers (duplex, autodetect, etc), os/software (ahh! get it away! ), hardware conflict (pci slot, irq conflict, interupt, etc) and finally the nic itself. Also, why use winroute, doesnt winme have internet conection sharing built into it (i dont remember, i've tried to avoid it .

I had this problem a few months about when I was setting up a web server. Couldn't figure it out for the life of me. The lights were lit on the card, but the connection kept dying. Ended up being the cable. Are the cables you're using homemade or did you buy them?

Thanks for all the replys, I think i may of sorted it out.

I uninstalled winroute lite, uninstalled the network card driver, changed the slot, and rebooted, and reinstalled the network drivers. So far so good (touch wood). I haven't been activly using the interface, but its still working after being up all night. So i'll see how it goes, if all good, i may try installing winroute lite.

As for internet connection sharing built-in to windows, i dont believe it allows sharing with non-windows based OS's (i'm running a linux box on my network.)

again, thanks. and lets hope it keeps working

It just struck me, but how does winroute only work with one nic? If you have two nics, ICS works with any os, one internal network nic that becomes the gateway, and the external nic to the cable/dsl modem.

I'm not blessed enough to have dsl/cable. so I'm limited to dialup. so my modem is basically my 2nd nic. So ICS works with any OS? I might look into that.

Heh, I've got broadband on the brain. And they just see it as a gateway. Back when I used ICS to route my network (before I got a firewall and a router) I had everything (windows, linux) working through it. Just set your modem to share (in theory, i never tried with a modem ), and it should warn you that the NIC will default to 192.168.0.1, and then you just set that as your gateway on all your machines.

I traced the problem to winroute. I reinstalled the program after having my ethernet card working flawlessly, and BAM, it died again.

I'm now using ICS, thats for pointing out that it works will linux too. The only downside is i can't portmap, and have all http, telnet, ftp connections forwarded to my linux box. This is a tempory problem until I get my linux machine set up as my router / firewall.

actually, you can, there's a utility made for changing those settings. analogx also has a similar utility.

Well, I have a similar probem.. except with windoze 98, and the fact that I had it working and them transfered the HD, networkcard, etc to another motherboard/computer, I installed windows, setup teh netwok card, BUT CAN"T acsess teh other machine, its a cross over cable, only 2 computers, and it worked before the new mobo, I have tried a few PCI slots, but still no go... :P Its a home made cable (run under teh floor from one room to another) and it worked for ages until I reinstalled windows.... perhaps I should just try a new cable first, (as suggested) Have to make another..

                              /me also having strange problem

                              Hi,

don't know a sollution for you guys but me is also having 'trouble' with his NIC's

All my desktops including laptop are having 10/100mbit nic's

Since I don't have cable/dsl at home I dl all my stuff at work, move it over to the laptop, and then at home move it from my laptop to a desktop which holds a burner so I can backup anything what I have downloaded...

                              Here's the problem..

I connect everything togheter with this crossed cable, since I don't have a hub, and am only using 2 computers connected.. If I have some new stuff to bring home I just unplug one computer and put this in the laptop..
                              Now it goes..

To get 100mbit the laptop has to be running and connected before I power up the desktop.. This way I get 100mbit connection..
If the desktop is already on, and I put the lappy on, I only get 10mbit.. why ?

I just don't get it.. (but I may be really stupid on this... )

                              Greetz,
