  • Ahhhhh Windows Can Blow Royally

I was working on my computer today and realized that there was this random hanging half-installed GPS software on my laptop. Since the computer is now sitting in my dorm not going anywhere for a while, I thought, hell this can go. So I go to control pannel - add remove programs, It goes through the uninstall, says sucessful so im like cool lets continue

But wait, its still on the start menu. Hey its still on the add remove programs list, the uninstaller did, you guessed it, NOTHING

So im like hell ill just manually remove it, I delete the files and then BOOM windows locks up. Im like what the hell?

Restart the machine and YAY a never ending boot loop, windows half loads and restarts half loads and restarts, same in safe mode and last good state and alll that jazz. So i go hell ill get my windows cd and just repair windows. OHHH no you cant do that!??!?!!!

You know why? Cuz according to the repair software windows is in perfect working condition no problems with anything. So unfortunatly for me, I have to reinstall windows and all my software....

not to mention loosing a bunch of stuff and my just finally completely organized music folder

And I dont have my music up here at college to reload it or anything so now I must wait till I go home to hear any music..... cuz i just dont feel like downloading it all!

Ahh hell... just needed to let off a bit of steam....

the HD itself is ok, so attach to another computer (even linux or something) and just copy data off that way so you lose no personal stuff. just have to reinstall programs.

or is there something i am missing here?

        Ow.
        I know the feeling.
2k1Toaster's idea is probably your best bet.

Get an adapter that'll let you attach the Laptop HD to an IDE and a Molex connector.
        And cross your fingers
        Best of luck man.

This is one of the reason I always has a IDE2USB adapter handy. Take that HD and convert it into an external usb drive and retrieve data that way.
Otherwise, open the case and make it a slave.

I normally would try doing that if I were home, because I could then throw the HDD in my Desktop machine and take it from there, but here at college I dont really have the resources and luckly didnt loose all that much.

And unfortunatly this time, somehow the Drive Table got screwed so I couldnt read any partitions at all so most likely popping it into another machine would have been hopeless. Well im up and running again... just no music .. for now.

Thats a good question. Considering I booted with the windows install disk, I dont see why some version of a bootable Linux wouldnt work, I dont know if they can read the harddrive...

I guess if configured correctly, that would be a really good way to recover data... Ill have to look into that, cuz if you have the tools to fix something, that something never breaks again...

I had used Ultimate bootdisk (or whatever I forgot the name, basically it's an IT must have disk), and some flavor of Linux to recover data when something like that happen.
