  • Any way to jam a stereo system that plays CDs.

I have a annoying neighbor that blasts his music 4 a.m. (Don't know why). It is really stupid and annoying. He plays the same hardcore rap Cd over and over and over again. Anyone knows how to jam it or cancel it out?

Better yet, can I jam the music coming from the speakers?

            Phase reversal/invertion?

I'm not a sound tech so don't ask me about it, but read about noise cancelling technologies that reverses/inverts the source waveform. Effectively mutes the sound. No idea how well it works in the real word though. Last mention I saw of it was in some noise cancelling ear defenders for noisy environments. The idea was that the noisy environment would be almost silent to the person wearing them.

No idea how easy that kind of stuff is to build.

If he's playing the music until 4am every day, then there obviously has to be other people who are upset with it. Are you in a house or apartment? If you are in an apartment they usually send a nasty letter saying that it has to stop (one of my friends almost got kicked out because her dog barked during the day when she was gone). I guess her neighbor worked 3rd shift and it was an annoyance for that person.

There is a slight delay when you do this so it doesn't completely go away but it makes it go down. The problem is that it works fine and dandy when inverted sound is directionalized. The earphones sample the noise outside of them and shoot the inverted noise directly to your headphones. They work well for repetitive noises, such as the constant whirr of a jet engine if you are unlucky enough to site right above the wing. For a constantly changing input source, the headphones will try to keep up, and do ok at it, but not complete because there is always a delay. The actual sound is going in realtime, where as the cancellation occurs at realtime + sample time.

But the problem is in a room or something, the effect is completely lost. The only way to dampen sound is with sound dampening materials! Go figure...

And to the "can I jam it question", Yes you could if he was blaring FM/AM at 4am (illegally though because you would have to transmit a more powerful wave than the FCC allows), you could just send a huge transmission of white noise over the full spectrum and direct it towards his house.

If it is a CD, then there is no external input. It is all controlled by the CD, which you can't get to.

And there are people in uniform that will help you file some public disturbance or something and maybe a citation will get him to stop. Alternatively buy him a nice pair of wireless headphones for his birthday. Or valentines day if you swing that way.

I just watched this the other day and think it is the solution you are looking for

All you have to do is enter "cartoon-land" and snag one of those noise canceling devices that works freakishly perfect to make every noise absolutely quiet! And then you should be good to go, assuming you can find a way out of "cartoon-land"

Generalized Standard Disruption of Peace Complaint in the U.S. (94.5% compliance, 2.75% harsher, 6.5% more lenient (I know, doesn't add up- but it's a polling of public offices...) state that any given residence is given 3 warnings over the course of a 180 day (6 month) period of time. Upon the 3rd warning, a Disruption of the Peace Noise Violation (Hours between 8am and 10pm (again- generalization) Citation is to be issued by the responding officer.

                    Standard fine- $500.

Get your towns noise ordinance information off of a website or by going down to the county office. Leave him a copy of it taped to his door, car window, front window, and any other piece of property accessible from public domain with the label at the bottom "Public Service Announcement". That will avoid trespassing and littering laws.

Find out what time he comes back from job. Let him sleep for 20 minutes (he must be tired) and then put your own loved cd in the cd-player... HEHEHEHE...!!!

Our neighbours son (18 or 19year old ) would come home at 3:00am put Kenny Rogers, The Gambler on full volume, then go to bed. Just the one song and always at full blast. I would have liked to show him how to hold 'em! No wonder I hate both kinds of music, country & western. Boom boom!
