    hey all,
    thought it was about time i started a log for my car pc... a while back, with the help of this awesome site, i put together a little system for my car. basically, i had an old compaq laptop sitting under the passenger seat, connected to a fold out touchscreen on the dash. it worked ok, but i was never really happy with it. i couldn't eliminate a heap on noise from the laptop, and its was way too slow to run centrafuse, keep freezing . i have just finished my first year of university, and am now on holidays for a while, so i thought i would begin building a proper pc to replace the laptop, and upgrade some other parts of the system while im at it. the plan is to install a microatx board in the glovebox. i havent decided on the exact specifics of all components yet, but i have some ideas in mind. couple of pics of the small amount ive done so far:

    this is the screen installed with the laptop, going to keep it, as it works quite well and fold away means wont attract as much attention from would be theives (pics are from mobile phone soz)

    here is glovebox where pc will be going:

    i finally got around to ordering the parts i needed, and most of them got here today:
    Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-G31M-S2L.
    CPU: Intel Pentium Dual Core E2200 2.2GHz
    Ram: Kingston DDR2 2x1G

    i put this all together with a 6600GT that i had lying around and mounted in the custom tray:

    i had an old 120gig laptop hdd sitting around, so i decided to use this. it will be more resistant to bumps and shakes than a desktop drive, and i didnt want to buy a new drive when i already had this one, had to purchase an adapter to make it work with the motherboard tho:

    so, for now, im just waiting on the power supply. i have ordered a m4-atx, but i live in australia, so it will take a while to get here. also have to buy a soundcard yet.

      Still waiting on the powersupply, so no more progress with pc yet. so i spent the day working on the audio side of of my car. in particular, mounting the two amps in the boot:

      these are both connected ans working, and it sounds great, even just running off my ipod, going to sound awesome once i get the computer in and fiddle with sound a bit.

        After quite a wait, the powersupply arrived . for now the computer is just sitting on the bench while i install software etc.. will install into glove box once that is done.
        i am running windows xp, and with most software installed, the computer boots from completely off to playing music in 34 seconds. 30 seconds if using hibernate.

        also, i have removed the 6600gt... it was just too big for the case i have in mind... i dont really think it was neccessary anyway... the onboard gfx handles videos etc very well.

        i did however buy a sound blaster X-fi.... this sound card is amazing!!!!!!! the quality is in another league from the sound my old laptop used to put out.... and the crystallizer software package that it comes with makes a massive difference too.

        testing on bench:

          ok, so im made some more progress... i build an acrylic case to mount the pc in. the powersupply is fixed to the roof of this, and the hdd to the side.. the motherboard tray setup slides straight in the front:

          so just gotta mount it all now... which shouldnt take too long. going to see family for christmas so wont make much progress untill after that...

            DOne!

            hey all, havent posted in while, so ive done quite a lot since my last post. firstly, i have upgraded all the speakers... kinda blew up one of my old 6" cones. so i have brand new speakers in front and rear... and they sound amazing .

            have also finished mounting pc in glove box... all running good now! i installed a pc fan in the dash as well (just under the holes you can see in the pic below) to blow cold air into the pc, seems to be working well.

            i am overall impressed with the performance of the setup... music quality is brilliant! and surround sound in movies rocks! i was stuck waiting for roadworks the other day so i threw on ironman... surround sound was so good i was almost disappointed when we started moving agen!
            also, i bought a usb gps of eBay and have that connected, and running brilliantly!

            so i guess at this point i can classify the protect as finished. however, there are still things to be added on, ideas i have include a fan speed controller and temperature monitor, reversing camera, and still looking at options for dvd drives...
            screen isnt really as glary as it looks in pics below, camera phone just makes it look that way... actually a very nice picture.

            kk so what does everyone think?

                      again, the screen is from ebay, and not branded. however, having said that, from what i can tell, it seems to be very similar to one model of Lilliput screen.. a couple of times, i have had small problems and was able to solve by looking up solutions for the same problem on Lilliput screens.

                          Hi kensbey, haven't seen you here in a while! I like the way you crafted the the plastic housing with the metal base. Very well executed, and it looks great! Dual core is the way to go!

                          What model of psu are you using to power that beast?

                            m4-atx is powering the system... probably a lil overkill, but i was originally planning to have a graphics card in there and wanted to make sure i had enough power..power supply is mounted on the underside of that top bit of acrylic. and yeh, dual core is definitely the way to go.... i can pretty much do ne thing i want and never any lock up.... even with 6500 songs in my library, i can load them all into a playlist in a matter of seconds!

                              ok, my system is all running sweet, but i need some sort of input device to compliment the touch screen. so i started with the keyboard shown below... it has a scroll wheel on the left hand side... a scroll wheel that is very useful for navigating through centrafuse.However, i dont really want this massive full size keyboard in my car, so i decided to make it... uhhh... not so full size... i wanted to keep the numpad and the scroll wheel, numpad to use as hotkeys, and the scroll wheel for navigating.

                              full post with more pics is here

                              this is working very well... i have the numpad mapped as follows:
                              7=volume down
                              8=volume up
                              4=previous track
                              6=next track
                              5=play
                              2=pause
                              1=skip forward
                              3=skip back
                              9=toggle visulisation
                              rest of the keys are mapped as shortcuts to media, dvd, radio, mixer etc.
                              combined this with the scroll wheel and i can navigate and controll the system very quickly!
