I found it was actually easier to make a PCB for the front, then fiddle around with wires. I used 2 boards and connected them with floppy drive cables!

could you provide us with some details of how to boot of compact flash? Do the cards fail quickly because of writing too much, how fast is boot time, etc.

CF cards rock! I've had the same 128MB CF for 2 years now, and it's still running fine. It has win98lite with the virtual memory disabled. The secret is to have plenty of RAM. This baby has 512MB, so it never needs to use any virtual memory, and doesn't write to the CF much.

I'm still waiting to see if it's possible to get xp embedded, as this would be a much better choice, due the the fact that drivers for 9x are getting harder to find - especially for the M10000 SPDIF etc.

so your PIC is doing serial to hd44780
plus whatever else to support buttons etc
are you emulating matrix orb or CF or
just serial to para and letting the epia
do all the character LCD support?
