  • 02 Mustang STEALTH Comp

Here is my computer stealth install for a 2002 Mustang GT. I'm certain that any style 1995-2004 will have the same space available for a full size motherboard and power supply.

    http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/atta...tid=2924&stc=1

From this pic you see the case I started with, which is a crappy one I have had for a long time. I used a dremmel to cut the tops off it. Then popped the rivets for the drive holders and removed that section. If you are going to do this project you MUST have some sort of attachment point for your AGP/PCI cards to keep them from moving back and forth or falling out. That is why they werent removed from the case. Last I made a bend in the case that will be used to mount the HD and to bolt to trunk.

    http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/atta...tid=2925&stc=1

You can see that I mounted the hard drive and trimmed the curve panel, as well as removing some extra AGP/PCI slots on the case that were unused and will need to be removed to make space for the install. I also show the fuel pump relay that will need to be moved. You also see the mount bolt for the curve panel, which is one of the mount bolts for your tail lamp. You can use the existing nut but if you dont want to remove it, the bolt is long enough for you to use another nut on top of it. A self locking nut would be best. Honestly though I doubt that the tail lamp will fall out if you use the stock one.

    http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/atta...tid=2927&stc=1

This shows the relocated pump relay as well as the PS installed. I used 2 long screws to hold the PS to the frame, I had to drill 2 holes for this. The realy was just unmounted from the top bolt and swung around 90 degress. Wasnt hard, just 2 bolts hold this.

This is the comp installed. Seemed hard at first to get in but fits like a glove. The pump actually holds the right side of the Motherboard to the frame tightly and the bolt on the left holds it in place. This thing wont budge.

Final shots, panel installed. Fits perfect no snags.

I'm sure that if you use no AGP/PCI cards then space is more abundant for you. Remember this is a full size Motherboard with a very large heatsink and fan. I also have about 4 more PCI slots that I could use and it fits perfect. Why build a box, take out your spare, or remove your seats to install a computer? This is the best way to do this type of vehicle in my opinion.

    Any comments would be appreciated

nice. just don't get hit by another vechile in the left trunk:-P another consideration may be venalation since you are completely enclosing the CPU.

The processor fan spinns at 5500 and blows air pretty good over the whole MB. So It just needs a little fresh air. I was thinking of putting a few small holes in a cluster in 2 places and attaching fans to the panel. I would make them small enough that you couldnt really see the holes.

Plus the Comp is underclocked to 100/100 fsb, but trust me still plenty fast and temps dont seem to break the low 20's in car. More air cant hurt though

I thought about someone hitting me, but why live life in fear
That is what insurance is for!!

One thing I can say is that my comp wont be stolen!!

            Squigg,

Very nice work there , I see that you put it on the same side as the fuel pump relay , any reasons you did not use the other side ?

very nice setup...as my first carputer i rocked PII with 200 GazillionHz (that thing was fast) ...i woudnt be concerned about pc being stolen but the actual LCD that sometimes stays unhidden
which one of 7" screens are you planning to use anyway?

I did not put it on the other side because I already had the wires ran there eairlier for my previous carputer box. Also because I didnt want to put the computer close to my car battery when I did the battery relocation kit on the right rear location in the trunk.

I'm not sure what screen yet that I'm going to use. Possibly the one from DSCustoms. Any suggestions would be nice! I would like to just have the 7in to control the comp with no head unit, powered by an amp. Also looking into USB GPS reciever. I would change my input program to either media car or myhtpc for something more touchscreen friendly. I'm going to keep the ATI Remote for backup purposes and mouse usage.

I will definately post pics when I get it all together.

I have read on here about other peoples computers getting stolen out of their cars as well as lcd's. But building the lcd conformed to the dash is more difficult to remove and probably wont be stolen. If it is something mounted on the dash by a bracket, it is asking to be taken. Me putting the computer in the trunk qp will assure its security.

BTW My first carputer was a 166p1 with 64megs ram and an 8 gig hd, TNT2 16 meg TVout. So this was a slight upgrade for me since my first one I built in Jan 03

How easy does that molding pop out? i am assuming it is just a tug and it comes right off.

Looks like you've put some good thought into this project. I just don't see a picture of the "stealth" part. How about posting a picture of it when it's all put away, said, and done.

The molding comes out eaisily. You should remove the aft most panel in the trunk that goes around the latch. There is 2 bolts that stick out from the roof of the trunk, that the side panel rests in. You just have to bend it a little and the panel comes out. I will take pics and point them out in a day or 2.

I know what you are talking about. The picture that I show installed doesnt have the aft trunk mold installed. I will update it later, the side mold was the issue of concealment. But trust me, you cant tell a computer is there once everything is back together. Give me a day or 2 to post new pics.

Its a great place if you want a stealth install, I on the other hand wish to display mine more prominantly - car shows etc. And like you said, why live in fear? I'll call someone if I have a flat
