I finished this about 3 months ago, but never put any pics up:
Took a Gateway desktop pc apart and put it in a smaller box:
I'm using a Intel (Kitty Hawk 1.5) Motherboard 1.2-GHz Celeron
    256 Mb Ram
    80 Gig Maxtor
Navigation is Delorme Street Atlas (hoping to find a cheaper Co-pilot sometime)
    Running WiFi "G" card
No CD/DVD as I just transfer files/movies from the house. I want to run a USB DVD in the front.
Using the Opus 90W PSU (works great!)
Running RCA wires into the headunit from my soundcard. Use Frodoplayer for my 10Gigs of mp3's.
I had a real tough time finding a place for my display. First I put it inside the cluster, blocking the tach and speedo. I used the Nav.program to read my mph. Then put it above my radio. When the sun was on it I couldn't see a thing, so I ended up putting the Lilliput touchscreen where the rearview mirror goes. (That mirror is useless anyway ) I have 2 others
We have car inspections here in PA once a year, so I'll just have to swap it with the mirror then. I just hope I don't get ticketed for it. We'll see.
I will say that this place is perfect, don't know about the legality. Hey, cargo vans don't have interior mirrors!
I don't plan to keep this truck, as I'd like a car now with an automatic instead of this stupid 5 speed. That's why the pc was put in a box, instead of permanently in the truck.
    Here's som photo's:
    Feedback please

Love the stealth look! Theives would just assume its a ratty tool box or something!

The rear-view mirror idea seems very logical (i'm so used to glancing at it quickly), but it would be awesome if you could get a cheap CCD camera pointing out the back. Put that into the AV in of your LCD, so that if you ever get pulled over (or anytime just for safety's sake), you can switch to the camera and have a trick looking rear-view monitor!

Looks really good, I don't know if I would have removed the mirror and put the screen there. I use the rear view mirror more than the side mirrors.
Are you using a tool box for you case? Also is that you gps receiver on the roof? What is it covered with?

          Thanks for the comments guys!

@Dominik, I've been working on the rear view mirror thing. I downloaded Frodo's files, but I don't know how to embed the "mirror" into Frodoplayer. and what camera should I use? will the image be inverted? I asked, but got no replies.
          Any help?

@Quattro and MykolJay, the mirror was actually (almost) useless, I got the spare tire on the rear, couldn't see much anyway. It worried me too, but after driving it awhile, the side mirrors are sufficient for now. I doubt that its legal, I live in PA but work in Maryland (on Lexus') I'm a Maryland state inspector...I would have to fail a car/truck for that.
However, cargo vans or some other trucks don't have the mirrors. Usually if a vehicle came from the factory with a certain part...it must have it and work.
ie: if the car has fog lamps, they must work.

The case actually came from my work, it had "special" tools in it that Lexus requires dealers to have. We got large boxes to put all these tools in and we were throwing the boxes out, so I grabbed one. (It is plastic ya' know)

Thanks for the compliments and comments
Any help on this mirror stuff? Could I just buy a cheap webcam? what about reversing the image?

Yes, that the delorme GPS receiver, I covered/waterproofed it with that plastic/goop stuff. Works good, I also use it to "glue" it to the roof. It peels off pretty easy and if carefull, it won't leave any damage. (not like I car on that truck)

                Same sats. Works great!
                I saw this thread:
                http://www.mp3car.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=28219
It doesn't seem to effect the signal strength at all.
                Check out the thread.

                  Hey,

We met at the Maryland get together. I studied for MSI many years ago, and as far as I know trucks don't have to have a rear view mirror provided they have two side mirrors. Just like what you said, this is because delivery vans and vehicles with solid rear doors. But perhaps the law has 'changed' since I studied this.

It's really a matter of trial and error. Find where the screen works best. I moved my screen as well, and so far, I've found a little bit better place.

                  Good luck and keep pluggin'.

It's in... it's finally installed!!!! But never finished!

                    Which car do u have?
PS: I'm at work now, it's dead, so I'm gonna chk the MSI book now.
Ofcourse, I live in PA anyway...so it wouldn't matter what Maryland's laws are

                      Found this here:
"if the vehicle is designed or constructed where the view through an inside rear view mirror is obstructed, or the vehicle is a light truck or multipurpose vehicle with tinting, stickers, etc., on the windows behind the driver, the inside mirror is not required" (but it requires both outside mirrors)

Guess I'm ok in Maryland, wonder if PA is the same...

you should get a rear view camera and use the screen. That would be pretty trick.

Wow, this is fancy I didn't know Hinda made these.
The rear-view mirror mod is cool. All you need to make it legal now is to have it display what's behind you. Just recently we had a discussion on what's legal and what's not - yours appears to be okay if it is used as a rear view cam, otherwise they might find it illegal even if you just use it for GPS (blocking the view of the road is what they call it).

Why not do the camera separate to the computer (i.e. use a regular CCD camera). I wouldnt bother with web cams and the like... Does the Lilliput allow analogue inputs?

Most of the CCD Cameras on ebay usually have a flip function, and they dont cost that much...

That might be a good idea considering there are various cheap adapters out there that will let you switch between your PC and the camera with a push of a button.
