  • Acura RL - CARPC Installation

To see the new install, go to the second page

I am finally starting the build and install in my Acura RL. Check out the dash and console, you can't ask for anything better. I will be updating my own website, but will be doing it here more often then not for the feedback.
Here is what I have so far.
I am installing everything in the trunk but moving alot of controls and sensors to the front in a couple of places I still have to figure out. You can see on the pic below I have alot of room.

    Dash/Radio Area Work:
-I will be hacking the 8" lilliput and molding the screen 1/4 to 1/2 inch inside.
-Mold slim DVD/CDRW above or below screen flush with dash
-volume knob (if I can't get steering wheel controls operable)
-infared sensors for TV tuner and sound card so I can use remotes if I need to for some reason.

    Center Console/Ash Tray Area Work:
-A/V RCA's to TV tuner card for misc video input
-ball mouse molded in flush or small joystick - I want a small joystick on the left of the shifter, or also have one completely hidden that I can pull out when needed( I dont' think I will use it that much.
    -Embedded microphone
-USB ports for keyboard and anything else that comes up.
-temp guage - gets hot in Houston, will probably need constant cooling setup
-power button for inverter and/or computer

    Parts Ordered or Owned:
    - V2mdmp MB, 1.4Ghz AMD, 400 Watt PS (I made this one a year ago)
    - 8" Lilliput - $289 delivered
    - Panasonic CW-8123-B Slimline Slot Loading CD-RW / DVD $50
    - Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum - From ebay for $69.99 new, refurb. Has volume knob and remote if I ever wanted it.
    - Hauppauge PCI TV/FM Tuner Card WINTV401 - remote w/sensor, $86.99 new
    - XMPCR SATELLITE RADIO
    - XPOWER XANTREX 1000 Watt 1000W POWER INVERTER - $66
    - Iguidance v2.0 with BU-303 GPS reciever $180
    - Pioneer 4 Channel Amp 300 Watts

    Still Need:
    TV antenna
    Temperature gauge
    Cooling system
    Keyboard
    Mouse
    Microphone
    Volume controller
    A whole lot of wire

I will probably delete this and put on my website, but I want to put it all out there in case I am doing something wrong
-I am most worried about the heat during the summer, but with a second battery, I can run some type of cooling system. I don't want to start the system when its 140 degrees in the trunk. They make a liquid cooling system that I might be able to run while not in the car to keep the temperature down. If put the MB and HD in a box, I only need to cool that area
-I am trying to find a USB volume control has has buttons. They make a USB knob that can be used for volume, but if I had something with buttons, I could hack that easily and use the controls on my steering wheel. I want some kind of volume control not on the computer just in case I need to turn it down fast. there might be something I could put in between the outputs from the video card and the amp, or something on the amp.
-The other thing I am trying to figure out is how to power the computer off and on. I can use a relay to give power to the inverter straight from the battery. I am not sure of the drain of the inverter when the computer is off. If there is not that much drain, then I will only shut down the computer manually by a switch, so I can leave it running if I won't be away from the car for awhile.
-I haven't decided whether or not I need to have a mouse accessible all the time. I am starting to think I won't need it that much, so I just put a USB plug hidden up front, and keep a miniature mouse in the glove box. Although I think it would just be cool to have a joystick mouse in the center console. I would then need a switch so I use an easier mouse if I am going to be something serious on the computer. (yes I will actually be doing serious stuff on the computer. I never fly).
-The antenna to the FM radio in the TV tuner card is going to be spliced into the antenna in the car. I have one of those antennas in the back window making it easy to splice into. Man I hope I get a good signal.

Now I have to wait for things to arrive. I want it look like the car came this way, and not loose any room in the trunk. I figure this install will take a day or two, a long day or two. There are so many options, and so many add ons, I am trying to stop myself from looking for more things. Plus I don't know if the parts I have will do the job the right way, like the FM tuner or TV tuner. I haven't even thought about wireliss yet either.

Eventually I want to be able to use voice commands to control the lighting in the car, the power windows, cruise, volume, and every other thing you really don't need. Its this websites and Media Engines fault that I am going this far, I can't help it.

Check out the website for some pictures of the cars area and other info, but I will update this when something happens.
    thanks for all the help,
    Kenny

The Powermate has the ability to click as well as turn up the volume, not sure if that would be useful for your setup or not.

Thats the one piece I have been thinking about using. By push button though, I mean I need something that has a button for turning it up, and a button for turning it down, and maybe a button for mute. Something that you would find on a remote (which I have considered hacking from my Audigy Platinum remote) Those are the switches I want to hack to be able to use my steering wheel controls.
If anyone wants to check out the USB volume control, I put the link below.

I was just messing with you, sarcasm just doesnt' come across that well on forums sometimes. I never use the emoticons, can't bring myself to do it. Oddly enough though, I already ordered the center console for the 2004 becasue the a/c unit is at the bottom, and gives me the room that I have above the ac unit now. It will give me alot more room, and I won't have to reroute other things like the hazards and fog lights.

Man I found the best thing for volume control last night. Apparently on some of the Sound Blaster cards, there is 4 pin connection that allows you to hook up two buttons. Each button will either turn it up, and pressing both will mute everything. It has to have the VOL_CTRL connector. I know for sure searching the internet that Audigy Platinum, and Sound Blaster Live cards. I am trying to get a list of all of them. This lets me use the volume controls on my steering wheel, plus I don't have to hack off any volume control from the audigy platinum. Now I didn't even need to spend that much money on a sound card. Check out the pics below, if you got questions, let me know.

I see that you made a custom double din radio kit. I really like how you made that dash piece. How did you get the color/texture matched so well??

I bought the extra bin at Best Buy I think, and chopped it up. It just happened to be close to the same color. If you have a 96 to 98 I think, I know its a strange job. You have to cut a square out, where you still have some of the indentations from the original controls showing. But the edge of the radio and the bin I chose covered it. I wish I could say I did a real nice job with that, but it was alot of bending and cutting to get those two to fit into the metal cage in the rear. I am going to scrap the metal bin behind the plastic to mount the screen and fiberglass everything. What I am thinking about doing if I have to, is to cover up the edges by making an aluminum trm piece. Although I want to buy the console for a newer model because it moves the ac to the bottom giving me alot of room, and letting me put the screen at the top. When you are ready to open up the RL console, let me know and I will send you the instructions. its not as simple as you may think.
                      later,
                      Kenny

Is that amp gonna be powerful enough to push your speakers? Just wondering, cus I just need an amp to finish my project, but not sure what kind I need.

In my opinion, the amp I got is perfect. It provides more power then any head unit you would buy, and has four channels. 70Watts x 4. Most head units are 50watts per channel or less. If you are just running the normal car speakers, no subs, then I don't think there is anything better. Even if you do run subs, you can use one of these amps for that as well. It is all about the outputs on your sound card. It has 4 channels, so you have a channel for each corner of the car, so you can control it the same way a head unit would, like left adn right, and front and back. With a sound card that has front and rear outputs, like most of the sound blaster cards, then you can control the sound the same way the head unit would, and use the properties for the sound card to control it, although you can do the same with the amp. You can controlt the bass and treble from the amp and from the sound card. To make a long story short, you can do the same with this setup as you can with any head unit. If you need some more info, let me know. [email protected] I did alot of research on this because I wanted the surround sound that comes in the car anyway, and so movies sound good. If you want some help with the sound card and the amp so you know you are getting the right thing, let me know. I bought a sound card that was way more then I needed. You only need a sound blaster card with the front, rear, adn sub outputs. Thats my opinion though.
Here is a link to the guy I bought my amp from. It is the same amp that is at Best Buy for $149.
