I recently had an opportunity to check one of these out, and thought I'd share some photos of a real-world in-car PC application.

This is obviously not my install, so I don't know the exact specs for the PC. The hardware is supplied by a company called Data911, and available in various configurations (lcd size, cpu speed, hard drive size, you get the point.) Westchester County PD also have Data911 systems installed in their new cars.

Officers can now get and update their jobs on-the-go, as well as access intranet and network via high-speed wireless link (seperate from 802.11x WiFi).

I believe these systems are running P3 1GHz w/ 12" LCDs. The displays are SUPER bright, and have a knob on the left hand side to adjust the brightness level. There is no startup/shutdown controller. There is a switch on the right-hand side of the LCD to turn the system on/off.

    Now for the pics..

    First, the car.

    ---

View of the display and keyboard. The system's on/off switch is visible on the side of the LCD, and the right speaker grill is visible right above it.

    ---

View of the brightness control knob, left speaker grill above it.

    ---

The CPU is mounted where the glove compartment used to be. It has PS/2 ports, mic port, expansion port for cardbus pc-card, 2 FireWire ports, 2 USB ports, and indicators for hard disk activity, power on, power switch, and over temp.

    ---

Radio and computer equipment is mounted in the trunk, on a sliding tray for easy access. The two black boxes on the front are radio equipment, and the golden box behind them is the computer's modem.

    ---

Closeup of the modem. They call it a modem, although it actually ties the high-speed wireless access, WiFi, and GPS together.

    ---

Well, that's pretty much it. The only thing I forgot to take a picture of is the round GPS puck antenna on the roof, which also houses the antenna for the high speed wireless antenna.

I hope you enjoyed a glimpse into a "working" carputer, and how they are installed.

    Cheers.

A buddy of mine does the Police installs. I go over and gawk at his work. It did however get me interested in my project. They pack a ton of stuff into those cars.

People used to do that when I had the winter tires on my 96 Impala SS (police package black steel wheels w/ chrome center caps).

The most fun I ever had driving a cop car, I was rolling through the "hood"... some little kid was riding his bike, I got on the PA and said, "kid, where'd you get that bike" he jumped off and started running

for a brief period of time I had an external PA system on my Jeep. I saw some kids fooling around behind a school dumpster, so being the idiot that I am, I pretended to be a cop and told the to do the whole shimmy down the wall with their hands up.

One of the kids was the son of the police chief. I dont have an external PA system anymore.
