  • Astra MK4 install

Just finished installing my touch screen and mini ITX car pc.

I am more into the car side of things and my mate is the computer brain side of things.

Thought I would post some pictures of it all installed

looking good, excellent finish on the dash. what products did you use?

can you operate the HU without the front flipping round? that would make it nice for when not using the radio.

Screen was fibreglassed and fillered in then rubbed flat and sprayed at a bodyshop with plastic undercoat then normal paint as the top coat.

My headunit is used as the amp so it needs to be on for that

Want to do something similar in my Astra only I'd prefer to have the screen lower and leave the air conditioning vents above the screen. Is there any issue covering the air conditioning vents up? Have u blocked air from coming out or do you let it blow behind the screen??? I imagine if you let it blow over the screen you would have condensation issues on the circuit board.

The centre vents only blow cold air so I wasnt too bothered about loosing them. You can also use the side vents and direct them at you if you feel the need but so far I havnt needed too.

To block the vent I used some dense foam that I cut to shape and pushed into the hole so it was a tight fit.

Because the PC is so small and runs nice and cool I mounted it inside a first aid box and mounted it in the standard position.

I still need to tidy the wires so you cant see them as easy but this is what its like.

Its a bonnet extension you can get.

Cheap fibreglass ones are about £40 and the proper Vauxhall one (Its an Irmsher option approved by Vauxhall) is about £130

                      Thanks for the comments

They are made by a company called 'DARE'

                          They are 7 1/2 X 19 Dare EVO'5 alloys.

                            Very nice mate

Seen your car on some Vaux forums (probably AstraSport or Mig). Very centre console is very nicely done

I am planning to buy an Astra Coupe turbo some time this year (waiting for one more year of NCB), and I probably will do the same to the centre console as you did, because the Sat Nav screen area is too small.

And its a very nice idea mounting the PC in the first aid box mate! But whats the heat inside like?

Another thing is, are you going to interface the OBD-II? Or Tech2 for that matter. I am really worry about the OBD-II for Astra (or any Vaux cars) you see, because Tech2 is proprietry and I don't think the OBD-II for Vaux cars is standard either... as far as I can remember, it is not the same as Opel's OBD-II.

What other mods do you have on the car mate?

Heat isnt an issue. The micro atx board runs nice and cool. Only thing that does get warm is the hard drive but doesnt get to warm to worry about.

I am looking into OBDII at the moment but I dont want to buy an interface then find it doesnt work.

A friend has an ODBII interface that 'should' work as its ISO the same as the Astra but need to try it before I buy one.
