  • Toyota Landcruiser Carputer

I'm installing a carputer into a mates 80 Series Toyota Landcruiser. Thought I'd make up a worklog for it to not only keep him updated, but anyone else here as well.

Luckily he's got a toolbox behind the rear seats which is MASSIVE - I love having so much space to work with. Downside is that when the lid is shut the entire box is water-tight, so no ventilation. Hopefully there is enough air volume inside the box that heat won't be a problem.

To give you an idea of how big it is, here's a photo

    The plan is -

    7" Touchscreen in the front
    12-14" Monitor in the back
    Dual Zone Audio / Video
    GPS
    Digital TV Tuner
    FM Radio
    OBD
    Reversing Camera
    In Dash DVD burner
    Bluetooth
    WiFi

Darren is quite a fan of overkill with everything, so I've decided to go with -
Hard Drive - 320 GB SATA
    Processor - Pentium 4 3.0 GHz
    RAM - 1 GB DDR400
Motherboard - 800 FSB, ATX, onboard Audio and Video
    PSU - 300 Watt 12 Volt

which should give him enough power to do anything he likes in the car (hell the kids could even play a pretty decent game in the back seat)

I will keep updating this thread as I progress.

Made some more progress today - MDF backing panels have been installed

I'm actually a bit dissapointed with the amount of useable room inside the box, it narrows down a fair bit at the top and that is causing me some grief fitting things in neatly.

And the motherboard - bear in mind, this is a full size ATX motherboard

Darren has decided to move stuff around a bit to make more space.

The original plan was to have the motherboard and HDD on the right, the PSU on the left and the Amplifier in the centre. This would have left a fair amount of room in the centre of the box for 'stuff'.

Now, the plan is to put all of the carputer hardware in the centre section (which can be recessed deeper) and leave the sides for 'stuff'.

At least it will save me having to extend all of the wires on the PSU!!

All of the main parts are on the backing panel - it actually fits quite well. Fingers crossed I won't have to eat my words when I start wiring everything up.

Lots of space there, shouldn't be any problems for you...

I'm a bit jealous actually, I'm putting bigger and better stuff in this carputer than I have in mine!! To answer your question - I'm in Gladstone

I've got enough of the hardware to start putting everything together now. Just bench testing everything at the moment.

We ran into some serious problems, but long, looooong story short the PSU was stuffed. Anyway that is now replaced and running a treat.

So I can pretty much say the hardware is finished.

Now to really get cracking with skins, software etc
