  • 2003 Kia Sorento 2.5 CRDI AUT

This is my third CARPC install. My fist car was a Peugeot 307SW. My second car was a Mazda 5. I'm now a owner of a 2003 Kia Sorento. Alle these cars have a double din radio mount. I'm going to "integrate" my 7" lilliput in the dashboard. Just the way I have been doing this for my Mazda. Here are the pics

    The car.

    Dashboard opened up.

Test fitting the LCD. I've used PCB material to make a mount for the LCD screen and add the side piece to fit the existing holes for the screws to go into.

    Overview.

There's still a lot to be done. Will post pictures of the installed LCD next week.

After the installation of the LCD I will have work on the wiring and the placement of the CarPc under the drivers seat.

    The CARPC Specs are:

Via EPIA SP13000 in a custom made case
    2,5" 60GB 7200 HDD
    M1-ATX power supply
    SiLabs USB Radio
    Velleman K8055 board for I/O

I'm running Road Runner with my own developed transparent skin. Been using that in my Mazda but will have to change the background to have a kia logo. I'm going to miss my steering wheel controls in my Mazda. I'm thinking of another solution to be able to control road runner without having to reach and touch the screen.

Opening the side panels was the hardest piece of the removal of the dashboard. You will have to use a hard plastic tool to prevent from damaging and scratching your dashboard. Also the side panel need some controlled force to get them of the dashboard. I will take some photos from the back of the sidepanels so you can see where the clips are that are holding the sidepanels to the dashboard and apply the force at the right places.

              Almost done

Today I had a dayoff so I spend this afternoon in the car to get all the cables in. Went very well so I decided to put the screen in as well. I will not be using my head unit because I'm using the siLabs radio which is performing descent.

I had to remove the drivers seat to make room. The cables will come out off the carpet on the floor where I made a small cut. On the seat is the custom case for the mini-itx board, HDD and power supply. Fits nicely under the drivers seat.

All the cables in the dashboard. Quite a mess but this will be taken care of.

Cables for the carputer coming out of the carpet.

Located the ground loop isolators in the back of the double din space behind the screen. Wrapped the ground loop isolator in foam to prevent rattling noise when driving in rough terrain. All the cables are wrapped in foam to minimize the unwanted sounds from the dashboard.

Will make picture of the screen mounted and working soon but it was getting too dark when I finished the install. Still have a couple of things to do before it's completly finished.

              * replace switching power supply of the Lilliput screen by a wire from the M1-ATX power supply.
              * Rewire the GPS receiver.
              * Get an additional USB cable behind the dashboard for my K8055 I/O Board

Please, dont forget to post some pics of the sidepanels

Could you measure the original radio metal case, please?

I'm need this dimensions in order to build my own carpc case which I'm planning to install on the original Sorento's radio place.

                Thank you!

I did not forget to take pictures of the sidepanels but it was to dark to make pictures by the time I finished the installation. I will take new pictures in a few days.

What do you mean by the metal case for the radio? All I had was a plastic bezel that held my single din kenwood radio. I'll take some pictures of this as well.

I'm sorry. I was thinking you were using a 2din radio. I need to know the distance between the face panel (where you intend to install your lcd) and the metal frame behind the radio compartment (for a better understanding I edited a related photo). I want to install all my carpc into the dash, in this place. Sorry for my bad english so.

Thanks for your help and patiance!

The distance from the back (metal piece) to backside of the dashboard (double din opening) is just a bit more the 18 centimeters.

Made the install final yesterday. I will (hopefully) not remove it for a while. Just to be sure, I did not reinstall the side panels as there are hard to remove without damaging them. I will test drive it for a month or so before I will reinstall the side panels.

                        The current install

                        The side panels.

Top of the side panel. As you can see the panel should be removed the pulling the panels towards you. Apply as much force towards you as possible when trying to remove the panels.

                        Bottom part of the panels

Hey! You did a very nice installation, man. Congratulations!!! I hope to get this nice look on my Sorie!

Do you have another photo from the lcd installation showing how you fixed it on the face panel?

I noticed you have some bottons on the left side of lcd frame. Did they come as it is from the factory or did you modified them?

Thank you very much for the side panels photos!

Saw the post. Indeed very different from mine. Looks easier to remove then the longer sidepanels in my sorie.

Hope the installation turns out ok. Will keep an eye on it.
