  • bramlet attempts to build cavalier carputer

I have just about finished buying what I need I have spent nearly $650 and another $100 on some new tools I probably needed anyway.

Here is what I have bought:

    Opus 180 watt DC-DC - $50 used on ebay
    foxconn 45csx atom 330 mobo and 2 gig ddr800 ram- $112 newegg
infinity ref 4 channel amp 75 watt rms per ch - $56 ebay
shark brand 7 in vga touch screen - $130 on ebay
bu-353 usb gps module - $40 on amazon
    griffin powermate $33 on ebay
wd scorpio black 320 gig $70 on axiontech webstore
wifi usb stick $9 on newegg
    4 gauge amp wiring kit
    vga cable and gender changer
    usb extension cables
    lengths of 8 gauge cable
a couple distribution blocks <-allthis=$145 lots of leftovers tho
a few types of fuse holders
    standoffs and screws
rca splitters a few different types
    sata cables

I have cut a piece of plywood to match the back of the backseats
half of this has a plexiglass plate cut out
the amp will mount on the other half

I need to drill the standoffs into the plexiglass and attach the plexiglass to the plywood next.

Sad news, the shark brand 7 inch touchscreen from gooddeals18.com does not work at all. It doesn't even power on. It sparked when I plugged in the dc wall adapter for the first time, and just never powered on. I guess I will try to power it though the 12volt batt line next, but I will try to exchange it. Guess I will see how good gooddeals18.com customer service is.

the shark does not work with regulated 12 volt either. Its going back. I have 30 day money back so might try another unit or get a different brand.

ok good that worked...I got everything in the picture except the ten foot VGA cable and gender changer. Thats a 320 gig WD scorpio black in the bag and cheap wifi stick in the middle. all I need is the screen, I'm leaning towards the double din lilliput. thats 1/4 in plexiglass but I'm not sure I can take it off if I wanted to. that was my plan but i made the holes to small. thats the 4 ga amp installation kit in the big bag on the right and I've got 4 male to female usb cables and the 3.5 mm to 4 rca adapter path. the griffin powermate and bu-353 gps are on the upper right.

where is that thing going to be mounted? i would definately use rubber grommets between the hdd and the wood... or even possibly getting an actual case to protect the components

the carputer is installed. I am running windows 7. I have got a 701 lilliput in a double din frame for a screen. I got it used with the extension cable for 200 bucks. My hdd is inserted into a "jam jacket" for a 3rd gen ipod and screwed into the plexiglass with a screen door handle. works great. I also glued some rubber between the plexiglass and the jam jacket rubber for double rubber goodness. although the bottom rubber is very stiff.

I thought thats what that was!!!!!!!!!!!! Im not a fan of the handle, but i do like the idea of you wrapping the HDD in a iPhone case to cushion the HDD.
