  • need help with first car-pc install on a 02 tahoe

hi im new to the car pc world but not new to getting my hands dirty lol ok so since this project started out as a " what the heck im board " project to a " what the heck did i get myself into" project lol , ok people this is what u call a custom car-pc install on a budjet lol , i had a old slim dell desktop pc on my shelf just dying so i decided to throw it my my tahoe but where was a big problem because i wanted it to look nice not just lying around somewhere so i started ripping my poor baby apart and found a nice lil spot for my pc where the factory sub woofer is , and since i dont use that speaker , it was perfect spot to begin , so i removed the speaker and cut the face of the enclosure to fit my pc ( remember im on a budjet people its a desktop pc) lol

ok so since i put the pc in da back of the truck i had to make some kind of an extension for the turn on button so i ran some cat-5 cable and desolder and solder the power on button and at the same time of my pc install i removed some junk that came with the truck like the factory amp and on-star unit lol so i decided it would be cool if i turn my on-star button into my pc turn on button lol

so now comes the hard part of choosing a front end and things like that i currently have the pc connected to my head unit aux port to control volume which is ok for now but if any body has any input or advice i will really apreciate it

looks good! the one thing i would change though is to put some thin black cloth(either speaker fabric, or some other thin, breathable cloth) on the inside of that factory sub grill. this would work in 2 ways-- hide the motherboard and wires, because thieves love to see wires leading to partially hidden(possibly expensive) equipment, and also provide a slight amount of air filtering.

For front ends there are the "Big Two". Centrafuse and Ride Runner

Centrafuse is nice, but you have to pay for it. You can download a 30 day trial version from their website www.centrafuse.com. Centrafuse is basically a plug and play front end. If you want something that works with little modification, this could be for you. You can purchase with our without navigation. I have heard that the built in navigation is a little wonky at times. Some people suggest that you buy it without navigation and imbed third party navigation software.

Ride Runner is pretty cool because you can customize just about any aspect of the interface and it is free. There are loads of plugins for this product. Their forums are pretty good for support as well. You can find information about downloading Ride Runner here.

There are a lot of other options available. These are just two major front ends. You can find an entire subforum for Front Ends here

Edit: P.S. Nice install. I like that you have two monitors. How are you powering your PC? Power inverter?

Yes. When you set up Ride Runner, you will be able to designate the directory containing your media.

There is a shutdown controller listed in the MP3Car store. It is $42. Don't know how well it works, but it worth looking into. Most DC-DC power supplies have built in shutdown controllers. A DC-DC power supply is going to be more efficient than using a power inverter. Less wear and tear on your charging system (battery, alternator, etc.). They will cost you some money though. Otherwise checkout the Power Supply forums.

It would depend upon what you are wanting to do. Check the power supply on the pc that you are currently using and compare.

I did some google-ing and it looks like dell optiplexes can run as low as 160 watts depending on which model you have, the year it was manufactured and its form factor (workstation, slim desktop, full size, etc.). You may be able to get away with the 160 watt dc-dc power supply. You should still check the power supply on the pc to be safe.
