I've always wanted a CarPC to be able to play my huge music library ever since I got my driving license back in 2002 or so, the first proposed setup was an EPIA MiniITX setup but I ran into problems with not being able to afford a proper PSU and screen. Besides, MP3 capable headunit started to show up around that so I got one of those instead. Recently my bro gave me his old Asus EeePC 701 so I'm like what the hell? Made some research and it turns out that I could reuse and upgrade the screen to be touch capable for real cheap so I went with that route.

    So the build begins!

The laptop itself with dead charger. No biggie!

    Stripped!

Rough idea on where the screen would go. Sucks that theres not much room available to put them, being such an old car

RideRunner front end and excellent visibility with the stock screen!

Best pics of the dash layout. Lazy to get better ones :P

    Laptop behind the screen

    Test fit!

Welcome to mp3car! Good start to your project. Do you have a vision of what the install will look like when your done?
IE-are you making a bezel to integrate the screen? what will you use for an audio sytem and how will you connect the PC to it?
An overview of your plans would help us follow along with your build. I look forward to seeing your progress!

Hey thanks! Haha I knew I was missing something in my OP but here goes. I'm planning to fabricate a bezel from scratch as I'd rather leave the laptop intact for some reason. Audio system wise, I'll hook the PC to the aux in from my headunit, which gonna be relocated into my glovebox. My car has gone through a lot of customization, interior wise with a lot of parts from newer generation Accord like the center console and the door panels. This is the stock dash layout:

Note how the headunit sticks out an inch due to a poor design of the dashboard itself. Theres barely any room in there! I'm relocating my headunit's faceplate to that position instead Future upgrades would be a proper 5.1 setup, but that can wait. For now, these chinese 4 channel amp powering my 6.5" door speakers and 10" sub will do haha.

Anyway, I've decided to give the plastic welding a try and made the bezel out of some spare ABS plastic I had lying around.

Slightly sanded with barely any high/low spots which is a plus since that would require very thin amount of bondo.

And the car itself if anybody cares haha

Very cool looking car. If the head unit does not fit well anyways, have you thought about dumping it competely? I guess if you like am/fm radio, it would add cost to the pc to have to buy a tuner. Also you would have to buy an external DVD unit if the laptop is not accessible but beyond that, I'm not sure what else you would miss.

          This might be cool to

I've thought of getting rid of it but I guess I have no other legit reason to keep it other than the fact that I love how it looks in there I don't usually listen to the radio and I have no reason to have a DVD drive now that I have all my media collections in the external hard drive anyway. But I do plan to add an external DVD drive later on.

Yup I'm planning to get that later on and yeah I'm gonna have some external USB ports probably mounted in the glovebox or the armrest. I'm keeping the whole build as stealthy as possible so there won't be any extra buttons or anything visible. Also, keeping the whole cost down to minimum I've spent about $70 so far for touch screen and USB GPS module, which I'm still waiting for them to show up.

              Hi ullyeus,

Welcome to mp3car. I can see that you are from malaysia, judging from the license plate and road tax. We are a bunch of fellow malaysians that also ran car PCs. Btw, I'm johorean but working in singapore.

              Among us we have :-
Hyundai Avante (mine) - running Intel D510MO.
Toyota Fielder - running ASUS AT3GC-i
Honda Civic 2006 -running ASUS AT5NM10-i
Honda City - running Intel D945GCLF2

Take a look at my blog http://carpczone.blogspot.com

*One day I hope to be as adventurous as you to mod the dashboard.

Haha hey thanks and yeah I'm from Malaysia and located way up north in Taiping. I've always wanted a CarPC setup since I was 16, and I'm 24 turning 25 in the few months LMAO. Talking about a long wait haha! The main issue is always the money. I've done so much work on my car myself and I could say I have enough experience with fiberglassing and stuff. The car was painted by me and my dad few years back

Anyway I barely have enough for this project, but since I've acquired the laptop for free, that took care of the computer and the screen itself. So far I've spent $100 for my touch screen and USB GPS module, which is yet to show up grrr. God I hate waiting ughhhhhhh.

As for the headunit issue, I have thought of getting rid of it altogether but I prefer to have it there for unknown reason. Maybe because I like the pretty lights up there? Haha.

Almost there! Note the relocated faceplate

I'm redoing the bezel as I'm not too happy with the finish (N)

                          Test run!

BTW this is how the stereo looks like at the stock location and that is as far as it can go

Updates! Received my touch screen panel today. Installed pic:

But then I came to a problem with the screen being non readable at all under direct sunlight due to the added layer of anti glare from the touch screen, so I went ahead and took the original anti glare film from the eeepc's screen

Anyway project slowed down for a bit due to this:

Yes, thats my car's floor if you can't tell. Thanks to me being an idiot driving through a flooded road. I've got my carpet WET and slight electrical glitches but I've got them taken care of. Almost killed my engine too. Changed my oil and got her running again, started on the first try with no funny noises or whatever like nothing happened LOL. Heh thats a good thing considering the engine stalled while I was driving ><

Now still waiting for the carpets to fully dry before I could put them back together again. Oh well.

My interior is back in, all is working fine until I realized my alternator is not charging >< It must have been fried from all the water from the flood There goes my funds into my CarPC setup ><

Anyway, I've added a 4 port USB hub in the armrest. One of the port is on the left side and its blocked, of course.

My external 2.5" HDD and a thumb drive plugged in. The bigger button is for my trunk release and the smaller button on the left is for the power button. Talking about stealth install!

Hacked USB connector as it won't fit in there haha.
