alright, this is my design -

processor, is still in the air, i need to find one that has a knob for volume control. might be looking into something like a bit one.

this is the gear list ----

~ Helix C DSP Digital Sound Processor

~ ZED Audio Leviathan 6 channel amp 6x230 watts RMS

~ ZED Audio Minitour single channel 1000x1 watts RMS

    ~ Hybrid Audio L4SE

~ Hybrid Audio L1R2 Ring radiator tweeters

Preassembled Black Double Din LCD Frame with 7" Lilliput 669GL-70NP/C/T-HB-RV HDMI DVI High Brightness

hard drive for the OS and software ---- their will also be a 1.5 TB media hard drive, I've yet to figure out how to power all of the perifials. might get tricky.
Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX SH100S3/120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD) (Stand-alone Drive)

motherboard, i went witht his one for it's size, and features, plus its just an exceptional system. what i didnt know when i ordered this, was it came with a media remote! a very nice one, with a mouse toggle on one side with volume and tracking, and a full keyboard on the other side, very slick, very well designed. 140$ for the features given is just extreme. very good system.
    Newegg.com - ASUS F1A75-I Deluxe FM1 AMD A75 (Hudson D3) HDMI SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 Mini ITX AMD Motherboard

the CPU, well really its an APU, a GPU + CPU in one. it's a new thing AMD is working on, if you really wanna know more, the video explains allot on the page.
    Newegg.com - AMD A8-3850 Llano 2.9GHz Socket FM1 100W Quad-Core Desktop APU with DirectX 11 Graphic AMD Radeon HD 6550D AD3850WNGXBOX

external sound card, not needed but why not
    Newegg.com - Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Professional 70SB088600002 7.1 Channels 24-bit 96KHz PCI Express x1 Interface Sound Card

power supply, I might be switching to this new 250 watt power supply that recently came out.
M2-ATX (160w) Intelligent DC-DC Car PC Power Supply

    radio interface
Mp3Car BoomzBox HD Radio USB Controlled AM/FM Tuner

this is how i'll be attaching the DVD slot drive

the screen should fit right in, but im still considering fiberglassing the hole to make it larger so i can get a larger screen too, i'm not sure.

now, the questions. from what i'm understanding, i was planning on using optic, because its a great transport, BUT now i'm reading and hearing that all the sound processors on the market can't digest the volume control data off of optic lines, so i might be limited in the sound processor i use from this. if anybody has any ideas or knows anything, please don't be shy.

I am currently using the good old Alpine H700/701 with only an optical connection from a X-fi Pro 5.1 and the volume control from the PC works great. Details are in my work log below.

thatd work out nice if i was using a h701 or h800, or even a bit one, but i plan on using a Helix P or C processor, i'll be using a pot. directly connnected to that processor though i found out a way to do that, than i'll just use that for my volume.

        PhilG,

To go along with this, I just finished reading your work log.... sick.... but I didn't see how you were accomplishing volume control between your pc and the X-Fi over optical. I have a X-Fi HD (5.1, THX) and using optical, I can't control the volume through Windows (7) or Centrafuse. I CAN control it with the program that came with it (Sound Blaster product) but not through windows. Are you running any type of link program like VAC (Virtual Audio Cable)?

I was running XP with CF and had no issue controlling volume and that was the master too which is great. Today I am installing window 8 and RR and again have had no trouble. I am using a Griffin Powermate to control the volume as I hate touch screen volume. I am now having an issue initializing it in W8 but it does work once initialized. So I'm not sure what to tell you.

I did have SQ issues with the X-fi in XP using files other than MP3. I have just found a different driver package for W7 that works in W8 and the SQ has improved 10x connected on my desk through analog out and an amp/speaker set. We'll see when I put it back in the truck using optical through H700.

"Eviling: sorry for the hijack, now back to your regularly scheduled program"

Hmm, if that was a hijack, I apologize. I figured my question (and the associated answer) would help guide the discussion based on Eviling's question about Optical connectivity and volume control (since I'm having a volume issue using optical, which could persuade him [presuming:him] to avoid a USB Sound Blaster type of option). In any light, if it was a hijack.... my bad.

not at all in my eyes its all very usefull info, i just had an in depth argument that optics off a computer send a volume control signal, he argued with me that none of the current or past processors took the signal, this is very helpful in the desicion, how ever i've already sold my h700

Wasn;t sure, some people get uptight so I like to pre-appoligize just in case It was very relevant I think.

For W8, there is a developers copy that can be downloaded from MS. If you serach the site here or over at Centrafuse forums, I think it was Ripplinghurst that post it a couple of months ago. If the link is still live, you can grab a copy. It does expire in the spring on Mar 8 though.

alright. i got an idea now, i think i'm gonna run a power inverter and a standard tower\power supply rather than anything special, i can build a pocket for the tower somehwere in my trunk, and the inverter can be mounted under my false floor somewhere. here is the inverter im looking at.

and heres the tower i'm lookng at.

This has been done for years however very inefficient, more heat and extra attention will have to be paid to try and keep the EMF noise out of your audio. When a proper P/S is under $100 and you still have to buy the invertor and likely heavier guage wire to power it, I'm not sure you will save much money when all is said and done and you may inherit some headaches. Just my opinion of course!

I dont think it'll be an issue, i'll just mount it far away from the amps.but maybe i should def go with the smaller one just to make sure thies not to much EMI going on. optic shouldn't cary it though. and the computers own PSU should take care of any impuritys and clean the power.

but power supply for a MINI ITX tower? i cant even find one WITH OUT a power supply lol

Sorry, a developer preview has been out for quite some time, so either you have your head under a rock, or the school you're attending isn't very up to date
