  • 10.1" Removable Tablet in Mazda MX6

So this is my first worklog even though its my second project. The original build was an 8"touch screen connected to an HP laptop in the trunk. I never quite got the first build to the level of completion that I would have liked and recently I began to realize that installing a tablet would be a great way to go. I ende up buying a 10.1" Asus Transformer tablet which I am very pleased with. About 4 days ago I began the install of the new tablet into the dash of my car. The biggest thing I wanted to make sure of with this build is that the tablet needed to be removable. I came up with a working plan and visted my local Home Depot where I procured the necessary aluminum and epoxy to begin the project. My plan was to create a hinged "pocket" of sorts that would open to allow the tablet to slide in and then close flush into the dash.

Currently I have completed the aluminum frame for the tablet and I'm working on fitting it into the dash. Because the tabet is so large it is going to take a lot of work to fit it in.

I'll post some pictures tomorrow when I get a chance to resize them.

Here are a few pictures from the project. The frame is still raw aluminum and will be painted later on. The dash looks pretty rough right now

Here is one of the completed frame. The inner hinged part rotates out to allow the tablet to slide in and then lays back flush.

Have begun glueing the frame into the dash. looking go so far, but its going to take a lot of work to make it look like it is supposed to be there. Also I rmoved the console air vents when I cut out the section for the tablet so I am repositioning them below the tablet. because the area is smaller I am having to cut down the vents and refit them. Fun but a lot of work

Finished sanding up some of the dash rework and painted some of it. The paint shows the curves better though and I realized they aren't as smooth as I thought. Going to have to do some more sanding. Front part of the new vents are done, just need to figure out how to reroute the air down to them. Bluetooth music receiver and obd2 came into today. Obd2 works great! Need to do a little more work with the music receiver but hopefully should have that working soon.

Still making progress. Dash is almost done just need to do some touch up with sanding and paint but its coming along well. Bluetooth music receiver works great now that I have a ground loop isolator installed. Biggest thing I'm still working on is climate controls. When I installed the tablet I didn't have enough room for the climate controls and the head unit. I chose to keep the head unit and have been working on an interface that will allow me to control the stock ac unit from the tablet. I designed and built the electronics (about 90% done) and have been working on programming android. So far I can change the fan speed and the temperature from sliders on my phone or tablet. Pretty cool
