This project is meant to be part experiment, part recycling project, and part test of my abilities. I have a 95 Ford F-150 XLT 4X4, that I use for light offroading, and hunting. I want to use an old desktop or 2 as the base for a "Carputer" that is totally suited to my needs. Also, I want to buy as little new product as possible. I can get old decommissioned PC's from work for a buck a piece, so there's a huge hardware source right there. I'm figuring on needing to maybe buy a touchscreen for the set up, but that's spendy on my budget. Also, even though I'm using recycled parts, I DON'T want this to look like junk. My truck is in nice shape, and I want to keep it that way. This will be a bit of a long term project, but that's okay. I have the time. Any ideas people have regarding carputing, and building would be appreciated. I have a nice, large center console in my truck that would make a perfect housing for the build, so space isn't a big concern. Also, I have a large 1500 watt power inverter that I had given to me that can be installed in the truck, so there is another big expense taken care of. Also, the inverter can double as a power source for other things, so BONUS. As for the cheap PC's i'll be cannibalizing, they are all Dell's, and they all have Windows XP already running on them. So, to sum it up, I think I have a good start on hardware, and if I wanna build an XP based system, I've got a good start there, too. Any ideas as to freeware or shareware packages, I would be greatly appreciative. I guess you could call this a "High Tech Redneck Green Project". Wish me luck!!
