  • Nirwana-Project worklog. The multizone Android SUV.

After multiple attempts to use a Windows based system, I have finally decided to go to a Android system. The Windows system still does things like provide screen power control, Internet, BT, etc. Basically things that the user does not interact with will be run in the background.

Now as far as the Android aspect, I decided to try a different route. The front passenger and 2 rear seats will get the following:

    Android aspect:

    4x MK808b units
3x Perixx PERIPAD-701 Wireless Touchpad with Backlit Keyboard

A lot of this stuff was salvaged from the previous install.

Now the way its going to be set up is that I have removed the resistive touchscreens from the screens and made them regular screens. These Peripad units are multitouch and have a built in keyboard. They work very nice with the Android sticks. So basically the touch pad and screen will be made into a arm rest type unit. I started to think, why do they have to be together? So I've separated them, it makes it easier to find replacements. It also is easier to use. No more reaching for the screen. The pads will be at hand level. Very easy to reach. Even the driver will get something similar but instead of a Android stick, I will use the tablet. The tablet will have Driodmote Client and the MK808b will have the server, that way I can control the MK808b when parked and my screen for entertainment is up. All units will be connected to a KVMP switch that will allow users to flip from shared to personal. The MK808b unit will display on all screens including the 19inch flip down when in shared mode.

The driver will then have a 2nd screen, a tablet which will be for OBD2, Nav, etc. Basically car centric stuff. The media screen will be a motorized screen that is only up when not driving.

I'll post pictures later. Im pretty excited about this new project.

    Touchscreen and Keyboards!

I decided I didn't want touchscreens unless I needed them. Instead I wanted a multi touch setup that was similar to a capacitive screen and worked 100% with Android. That solution came from Perixx. This company seems to create different ranges of touch and computer input devices. I saw this on Amazon and decided to try them. They worked perfectly with Androids. 99% of its features work. I can zoom, flick, drag, basically anything a capacitive screen can do. Your most likely thinking SO!!!!!! Well this also has a unique integrated keyboard which also works with swipe! This makes one handed use easier.

Another thing I needed is that 3 of these had to be used. One for each passenger, except the driver. Upon investigating the unit, I saw a tinyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy little button labeled connect. I pushed it, the dongle started flashing, then held power on the pad and that was it. I was able to use all three units at the same time along 3 different computers (I work in IT at work so have 4 computers in parallel.

For the PC I decided to use my tablet as a similar pad to control the media Android unit. I did this with Droidmote server on the media unit and client on the tablet. To control the Windows 7 PC, I use another app called Wifi Mouse. This installs easily on Windows where as Droidmote seems to be geared towards Android and is a hassle to get on Windows. This works flawlessly on both.

    Pictures below!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      Displays!

There are a total of 7 displays. Two are Lilliput w/ touchscreens removed. Then one screen from short-circuit.com, w/ touchscreen removed. Finally 1 K-90 (remember those????) motorized screen w/ touchscreen controller removed. Each seat gets a panel while the driver gets the motorized screen. Reason for that is because the driver should not view media while driving. So while I am doing that, that screen is folded away. When I park though, it comes out. With that screen I can switch between media PC and Windows PC. The tablet will only be for driver orientated stuff, with the option to override all the screens and push media to them, but passengers can not interact. I use this feature when I am alone in the car.

The motorized will go in the dash. Then the two Lilliputs will go in the rear put into holders that will be made by me. The keyboards will be held into place via camera windshield suction cups. I will flip them to attach the screw part to the car and the suction cup to hold the KBs. This will allow the user to adjust them to their needs. The front passenger will get their screen in the visor.

      Pictures below!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two Lilliputs, and a generic screen.

Ainol Nova in pieces for new home permanently in dash.

K-90 motorized screen. Will sit above Ainol screen.

PS: The 7th display is a 19inch flip down in the rear.

        Media PC and other components!

Each seat, including the the media PC consists of many components, but I will for now only cover a few.

The unit: RK3066 / Dual Core Cortex A9 / MK808. This unit has BT so I think its the MK808b. The unit comes with 4.1 and is fairly snappy. Viewing movies is flawless and games and apps are the same. The unit is connected to a HDMI to VGA converter and then goes to two VGA powered splitters. From there it goes to the KVMP switches which allow each seat to toggle between this media PC and their own individual Android units, which have yet to be selected. All Android units have HDMI to VGA converters. I wasn't going to replace all 6 displays, which are all VGA. Each converter cost me about 9.99 a piece and can be used for a lot of HDMI devices. The converters also split out the audio in the HDMI signal, so perfect for 3.5mm jack for audio.

Before I had to use mini-pac units to use as keyboards to emulate the button presses that the KVMP requires. Thankfully I don't think I need them, because the touchpad keyboard is recognized. So thats how users toggle between both computers. They also have the option to only toggle audio. So say the rear is listening to music, but one user in the rear wants to also look at pictures but not disturb the others, he simply pushes a button sequence and done.

        Pictures below!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

MK808b with Bluetooth. Have 4 units, one for each passenger except the driver, and another for shared user use.

HDMI to VGA w/ audio split out.

        One of 5 KVMP units.

Two powered VGA splitters stacked to create 7 usable ports.

          Windows PC and seat rearrangement!

Decided to throw in some pictures of the Windows PC. It basically controls the power for amps, screens, BT headset emulation, DVD rom, media storage, Internet, Wifi, +++. It only runs in the background, so no user interaction.

I also have a secondary battery, which will power the Android units and allow them to stay on all the time. No boot times. I haven't tested the drain with the Windows PC yet, so I don't know the power draw. Will get back to you on that. In the picture I am missing my amps and subs which have been installed, but I haven't taken updated pictures yet.

My seats were redone. Didn't need 3 rows, but wanted floor space. Deleted the 3rd uncomfortable row. Modified the 2nd row to take its place, opening huge amounts of space. My logic is that I will never seat 6 people, so give the room to the 4 I will.

          Pictures below!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Car PC hatch in closed mode.

Car PC hatch in open maintenance mode.

Second row redone to go into 3rd row area.

Another of new seat install. As you can see the Sub and amps haven't been installed yet.

Yet another interesting build. Watching intently.

Love the peripad. BTW is it pronounced pe.ri.pad or per.i.pad?

Always wondered how to get multi-touch since the only 12 inch liliput in the MP3car store did not offer it.
                This absolutely fits the bill.
Guess I will finally be removing my Space Navigator from my build.

Thanks for introducing me to a great new product.

I know it's designed in Germany. I was praying it worked with Android and when it did I was a kid in a candy store. But then I realized I needed two more and they had to work together. When I saw they were 2.4ghz, I thought I was doomed. When I got them though I saw a tiny button on the tiny dongle. Held it in and it started to blink. Then held in the pad power button and I was set. No cross talk at all. I think these are perfect for when you don't want to reach for the screen. Just build it into the arm rest and since it's black it blends in.
