  • 1966 Chevelle, Custom front end & Custom Instrument Panel. Arduino & Processing2.js

    Hey guys,

Guess i should start another one of these. After having a few car pc systems I decided to take a crack at going a bit deeper into the UI design.

    Well... lets get started.

The car-- 1966 Chevelle Malibu. Pro/grand touring setup. Chevy LQ-9 6.0L lsx engine. Right now it just has a cam swap, headers and intake. It's in the body shop right getting sand blasted and we're replacing the rear quarter panels. It looked like this... but I don't like red, so It'll be getting either a Cyber Metallic Gray (zr1 corvette color) or Nebula Gray Pearl (Lexus color)

    The Audio --
After being very happy with my last system in my corvette I'm going to stick with a fully active design. I replaced my tube amps with another Zapco Ref 1000.4 amp (150x4), I upgraded my mids to Seas top of the line w18nx, paper cone with nextel coating, Same tweeters for now (dynaudio md130) but I'm not sure if i'll have installation issues, Same sub because it fits my taste perfectly (tc-sound tc-9) No rear speakers. However, I will be using a hidden head unit to handle the processing and to simplify and cut costs. It's a pioneer premier DEH-800PRS. a pretty good head unit that can do time alignment, run fully active setup and have enough eq'ing for me. The car will also get fully deadened with a 100% layer of acoustical foam to absorb noise as well.

    The Geek --
One thing i hate about car pc's (always had) was the reliance on a touchscreen and having to take your eyes off the road. I decided to create a custom UI that is based on; what is refereed to in my industry as; 'marking menus'
Since the car will be a daily driver and more so used as a grand-tourer, i'm adding such creature comforts as Power locks, Power Windows, heated seats, cruise control, etc.. I try to pride myself on having clean installs and adding a whole bunch of buttons for all those functions was a big turn off. So instead of 20 buttons, i'll be installing a dell venue pro 8 into the center console and will be running this custom UI:

To add to the tactile feel, i'll be installing a knob that will be covering part of the screen. This is part function and part aesthetics.

As for the instrument panel. It's going to be run on a linux board and will use an arduino to get obd-ii data as well to control stepper motors for the gauge needles. here is my work in progress so far:

    more to come....

I really like this idea.will there still be a center screen or will the info (say current track/audio) be displayed on the dash?

Thank you . It'll be completely different next time it's posted though. Better everything

Sorry. Didn't get a notification of your reply. There will be a center screen and also; phase 3 will also have track information displayed in the instrument panel

Got a dell venue pro 8 and after bringing it into my car, I realized it was not going to be readable installed in the center console laying flat. Back to the drawing board with the ui design. This time I'm designing it so that the color can be adjusted in the fly. The capacitive touchscreen reacts differently then the mouse so it's a but buggy at the moment.

What kind of computer are you planning on using for your instrument panel (UDOO or something similar??). How quickly does it boot?

How are you talking to the Arduino? USB or one of the Serial Ports?

Would you be interested in sharing your code? I haven't played in Processing2.js but have been relearning Java through Android lately. I would love to see how this looks in code... I am just starting in on 2D graphics and animation.

I have my Nexus 7 talking to my Arduino via ADK and displaying values on a simple dial and digital gauges. I was planning on using it as my instrument panel in my IH Scout.

BTW... I really like your Chevelle, any pics under the hood? My first car was a 4 door 67 Malibu

I really like the design on your instrument cluster!! nice work! I also have a custom LCD instrument cluster on my car, that runs on a tablet(android) installed on my dash(where the oem instrument cluster was). Do you plan on embending it on a device??

edit: I just show the video on your first post ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=77vv...ature=youtu.be ). Was this a Cold Boot of the linux system on which it runs??

i was going to use udoo. i never got too deep into testing this as i had a son and all my time got sucked up into...raising him. so the project was shelved.

sure thing. i need to consolidate it and comment it. I'm a novice at any type of coding, so i'm sure i did a lot wrong. but it

It's very unimpressive under the hood right now. Actually it's empty It had a very beefy 396 under there but i ripped it out and we're putting a 6.0l lq9 (iron block ls2) in there. hopefully a month out, but i'll update with some pics.

thank you! it went through a bunch of iterations until i found something that was clean.
no, that was just a test to see how it looked. it was running off my win7 laptop
