*** Update : added more install pics

This is my first attempt, so please feel free to laugh, but also feel free to comment, I have no pride to bruise.

Here is a few shots of what I have got so far. What I am looking for are opinions on the overall layout of the frame before I start filling and fiberglassing.

The size of the screen leaves just about no space on the sides. I initially wanted to have the sides slope at more of a angle back down to the dash but it does not look like this is going to happen here is a closer view of what little room I have on the sides with the current setup.

So what do you guys think? Am I on the right track?

oh, and I forgot, I also was looking to get ideas and suggestions on what to do with the vents above the screen the screen blocks about a 1/3 of the space that the vents once occupied, I would like to keep them opperable if possible. I was thinking of just cutting some slots in a piece of wood above the screen.. anyone else try something different?

Wow thats an awfully ambitious project but it looks like it should work. You still have a ton of work in front of you though. I think it would still have been easier to start with the stock part. If nothing else you could still reuse the vent portion of it. Good luck and keep us posted.

I was going to use the stock center piece, but the screen was so wide that I would have been cuting trough the clips on the side and the screen is rather thick because of the backlighting needs at least an inch and a 1/2 clearence, I thought that it would petrude to far. I still am concidering trying it again with the stock piece as a base, but I think I am going to go this route first and see how it goes.

ah it is really no different from what you have to take out to but yours in, just looks worse cause the design of my dask is slightly differnt and takeing the center piece off exposes the whole center.

I have had it off for over 5 months now, no stereo for the last couple of weeks, I have kinda gotten used to a big hole in the center of my dash.

              Your screen look real good!

You should mold the original vents into your new housing...I think that would look and function badass!

                  .

I like it, ballsy but cool.. As far as the vents.. could you get some from a junkyard and incorperate them into your design ?? (near the top of the screen, that big open space)

edit: oh a few more things:

you should consider tilting the screen backwards increasing the angle to your eyes... it looks to flat and you might have trouble seeing some portions of the screen....

Also, the two side rounded wood pieces stick out a little bit and when you cover this it's going to create an awkward ridge...

I am thinking of makeing it pivot up and down for that reason, but that might be overkill, I have not glued it yet so that angle was just a guess.

Ya that was my major delema, the few people I have had look at it think once it painted it will look ok, but I am unsure myself. That is the part I keep struggleing with tring to figgure out a better way to do it.

                      Thanks for the comments

I just went out side and cut up a piece to show what I had in mind, the cut was ruff and Would box in the vents but this is just to show how high up the vent will now be

you can see in that pic just how much of an angle the vents will now be at

And this one will give an overall idea of what i might look like in the front.

I'd put some insulation around it though so when you run the heater your not heating your screen.
