  • 2005 Volvo s40

Finaly i have started my project now that i have time, since i'm almost on summer vacations (2 exams remaining).

My car is a 2005 volvo s40 2.0D - 136bhp, it's a quite difficult car to install a lcd , since the center console is filled with buttons and has no free space.

This is my solution (that's not an actual pic of my car, but it serves it's purposes):

Those 2 zones are about 3.5cm thick. The right one will have a motorized ts monitor(using servos), probably a mm400 7" ts, since all the other one are too thick(if any1 knows about monitors that are not thicker than 3,5 or 4cm tops i would appreciate it), and the left one will hold a laptop slot loading dvd drive, as well firewire, usb, cardreader, IR, and other things.

The computer itself will be in the trunk. Im considering a p4 2.4ghz, p4s800vm motherboard, 2,5" hdd (40gb),wireless pci card with roofmount antena, bluetooth, reverse camera, usb gps(already have it) etc etc...

    what do you guys think?

    Cheers from Portugal

A vertical motorized screen...cool ideea! However my main concern would be the the screen shaking as it wouldn't have too muh support.
Yes, the MM400 is the thinniest touch screen monitor. Check out the sticly on it, I've entered all the dimensions in there...

What that in the top center of the dash? A speaker...? If so, remove that and put a flip up screen in there...

well as i said the photo it's not from my car itself. mine doesnt have that center speaker, therefore the vertical sliding monitor it's my only option.

I dont think it will vibrate as it will be servo operated, the servo itself should be able to keep the monitor in place. I'm still working on this last one, because i have to put 2 servos in there and it's getting a little difficult because i dont have much space available.

Tks for the info on the topic about the mm400 (i'll go check it right now)

I'm sorry I have to say this, but after a little bit of looking around at your dash, you ideea wouldn't look that good as the space behind the center console is empty...
Either place the LCD as it is on a bracket somewhere. If you want to mold it in, it's a really difficult job. The best looking thing would be to put it where the stock LCD and cd is, and relocate that display soemwhere else...but that could void the warranty of the car, as it definatlly implies extending wires.
Third option would be a flip up screen, in the top center of the dash.
Fourth option, a motorized screen instead of the center vents.
Fifth option, roof flip down screen.

                Ok, you have some ideias

The empty space behind the center console is going to be used to mount the servos and certain controlers, and it will be completly sealed off

idea nš2 - the radio uses a fiber optic system (MOST) so there is no way for me to tamper with it.

idea nš3 - my parents would kill me (it would no look factory alike and it's a realy bad idea to do holes in the dashboard)

idea nš4 - my parents would kill me (again), and i would dye during the summer.

idea nš5 - no space available (have some plastics on the roof) i think it the only monitor to fit would have to be a 5" ou 6" (and i would have to bend my neck and to take the eyes off the road for too long).

That option it's the most reasonable one (the car has 2 months exact - it was my 18th birthday present(legal age to drive in my country))

The last option would be to remove every single button from the center console and make some kind of interface to the pc so that the pc could operate the controls. And the monitor would be right in the midle of the center console (but thats suicide...the car would loose its warranty)

                Cheers

Well, I just gave you the basic ideas on how a screen is usually mounted...

Where are you from, could help with some ideas on where to buy stuff...
                  EDIT: Just seen-Portugal...

Come to think of it, the only drawback I'd see to your idea would be the stability of the screen, as it lack the support from the right...othere than that, done properly, it can look AWESOME!

As for the monitor, i had already thought those options out. this is the only way to make it look like factory

                      Other Mounting Options

I have been looking for an inventive mounting option as well and came across this hinge design used on a Cooper Mini.

I am looking at fabricating a duplicate metal faceplate (so as not to damage the original) to test a swing as used in the mini.

What the latest on this thread? Sorry to drag up such an old one but owning a 05 S40 im very curious to screen placements.

What screen could I use to flip up on the dash(ie: the top speaker grill)? That might be a very good option as I have speaker wire's right behind it and can hide any holes I may drill for cable's and such when the screen is down.

                        Thanks for the help guys.

The project is going at a very slow rate.

For now i have already instaled an fm modulator that works both for the ipod and the car pc. (excelent sound 5*), and i have also passed some cables from the trunk to the cup holders area (/usbs, 5/Gnd/Gnd/12v + vga)

I have also already chose the computer for this project - asus m3n85 (my old laptop) using an carnetix p1900 to power it.

as for the monitor i'm thinking of doing something like bugbyte and the original s40 nav system. that means touchscreen is useless so i will use a touchpad in the cupholders area.

After almost a year trying to develop a way to put a car-pc on the s40 I've succeded.

The trunk (still missing the psu):

Dash: (don't have the screen yet, just a spare casing, but otherwise it's almost done)

Real Nice Job MJRO - very slick - my wife drives an S40 and is nagging me now - thanks

A word of warning though, if the MOST system in your S40 works the same way as my XC-90 then if you remove/disconnect the screen that displays the Frequency / CD / Temp, then you may well find as I did that the whole car is disabled!
I ended up leaving just that screen connected and hiding it behind the touchscreen for the PC which I mounted where the Radio / CD was.
If you do remove the Radio, then the HQCT module (see elsewhere on the forums) is a great replacement (needs a little work), and you can take the stock amp out and replace it with a new one that can be fed by the CarPC soundcard. However don't forget crossovers if you do that as Volvo amps have their crossovers built in.......
