  • Baba's 1997 Acura 1.6EL CarPC

Hello everyone. I am nearly finished with my CarPC install and I thought it was time to share with the community.

I've got a 1997 Acura 1.6EL -- some of you might be scratching your head right now in disbelief because the 1.6EL wasn't sold in the US or anywhere beside Canada to my knowledge. Basically the car is a luxury Honda Civic, that's kind of an oxymoron isn't it? Oh well...

I am currently having USB connectivity problems, I hacked together a cable using some wiring I had lying around and it worked great for my "temporary" CarPC, an old Celeron desktop. Now that I have put in the SP13000, the USB seems to work when it feels like it. I've also tried to hook my Powerbook up in the trunk to see if it was just the Via board, but the powerbook didn't like it either (didn't see the hub up front at all). It's not like I did a bad job with the cable though, I used "bell quad" with 2 shielded pairs and 1 ground, all connections are crimped and I've confirmed there are no shorts at all. I'm going to get some new USB cable to see if I can figure out what's wrong. The only thing I can think it would be is that the cable itself is too long (something I thought wouldn't be a problem because it's only about 20 feet, but i've got a powered hub on one end and it's the only thing going into the computer at the other).

Software wise I'm using Centrafuse, it's decent but I find it slow and the buttons are a but small in some instances. I'm waiting for 1.3 with great anticipation. I wish that CF could read iTunes music libraries and just go from there... would make my life a lot easier, I find that it doesn't see some of my ID3 tags and I have to use the directory function to scan for some music. I plan on using rsync to sync my music library wirelessly from my home PC, if CF could just read itunes music libraries I'd NEVER have to bother updating tags -- that would be very nice.

For GPS I haven't quite got around to installing yet. Stupid Destinator hasn't responded to any of my 3 emails. I'm considering installing iGuidance instead. If you have any thoughts please send me a message. If you know of a thread that explains exactly how to install iGuidance for CF i'd love a link to it.

I think that's about it for now. Oh, one last question. I picked up a 12v 7.2AH sealed lead acid battery from my local electronics shop today and am having difficulty deciding how to install it. I guess I have two options -- Use a relay/solanoid (sp?) or use a battery isolator. I'l not quite sure which one I should go with. I am super paranoid about draining my car's battery, then again, I'm also paranoid of loading my alternator too much -- sigh. So many problems!
