  • 1997 V6 Ford Mustang - In Stang Entertainment [56k Beware]

    My Mustang car PC project started out a while back with a basic in computer case in trunk to HU install. My goal was to first test how well the PC would hold up in the temperature flucations where I live. I wanted to see how reliable it would be. After a short hot summer and long cold winter I am satisfied with the result and have decided for a more permentant install.

    {April 15, 2006 - Deconstruction}
    First I broke it down to what I had available for car PC and took everything out of the old computer case. This is what I'm left with (My named parts list is in second post.:

    { April 19, 2006 - The Case }
    I decided a simple boxed plexiglass case would be the easiest to do. I ended up dumping the 5.25 DVD drive entirely from the case. Eventually a slot load USB DVD drive in the front dash is planned. This is the final case result.

    { April 22, 2006 - The Carputer is Back }
    Installing the new case design into my car was simple. All the cables were already run from before, so I just needed to mount the case and reattach cables.

    { April 29, 2006 - Messy Cables Need Cleanup }
    Because of the length difference from where the old car PC was, I had plenty of extra cable to hide. Most of the PC cables were hidden in the passanger side interior panel. Power cables I used clips to hold the wires in place. The look is much better.

    { May 1st, 2006 - Subs Arrive in Mail }
    It has been a long few weeks waiting for these to come in the mail, but they finally arrives. Dual PG Xenon X10D4 and PG Xenon X400.1 amp. Currently I'm scouting what is available for enclosures here in town, but I will probably end up building one.

    { May 6th, 2006 - Sub Box Construction Day 1 }
    Failed miserably at finding a sub box in town and figured building one would be my only option.

    { May 7th, 2006 - Sub Construction Day 2}
    Unfortunately, I only have three longer wood clamps, so I couldn't finish the sub box this day. I need to pick up three more so I can put the back on the box. I was barely able to make the three shorter wood clamps work with the top on.

    { May 8th, 2006 - Sub Construction Day 3}
    Put the final piece of the box together. All thats left is to finish caulking the interior and possibly carpet the outside of the box.

    ( May 10th, 2006 - Sub Construction Day 5 }
    So, I found out I suck at carpeting. Its not horrible looking, but it isn't great. All in all it looks adequete.

    ( May 11th, 2006 - Sub Construction Day 6 }
    Finally got the subs installed in my car this day. This was well worth the effort. I like the deep bass I have now. Although, I think I'm either going to need to upgrade my HU or my soundcard. The box was just slightly too big to fit into my trunk without modifying the back seat area. I also had to remove all the wiring and distribution blocks from their original places and put them in the trunk.

            Very nice. How long did the whole thing take and what did it set you back?

            But you took you time and did it right. I like it.

              Thanks. To be honest, I've been planning the computer for 4 years. It wasn't until last summer when the motorized touchscreen vga monitors started showing up that I dropped the money and did the install.

              All in all I think my spending can be broken down to:

              $650 cnd - Computer Parts
              $35 cnd - Plexi Computer Case
              $750 cnd - Motorized VGA Touch Screen
              $250 cnd - Wires, cables, ties, loom, distrib blocks, etc
              $500 - HU and Alpine Speakers (Pro install, never wasting money on that again )
              $450 - Subs and Amp
              $50 - Sub Box Build
              $180 - Optima Yellow Top

              .... ~$2800 cnd. Hmmm, I've spend more then I thought... anyway.

              The original setup took about a week end to install and build. The current setup I've been working on since mid April, and still going.

                There should be around 25 pictures in the first two posts. Are they not showing up for you? I also have them here:
