It's been about two months now since I started the planning and testing phase of Laptop based CARPC. I have the majority of things allready, so I am ready to start the functional portion of my testing. So far all that I done is the software testing and configuring.
Here is what I have so far.
2004 Suzuki XL-7
White Pearl with Tan Interior and Wood Grain Accents
Just the typical Fire/EMS Goodies
4 corner strobes
LED's in the grill and back window
LED Dash Light
Recently - Panasonic AM/FM/CD/MP3/WMA Head Unit
IBM Think Pad T21, 800 MHZ, 30 GB HDD, 256 MB Memory, DVD-ROM, 802.11b PCMCIA Card, Holux 213 Sirf 3 USB GPS receiver for laptop PPC
Laptop will be mounted cop style. Until I get the 7" screen.
In addition I have a Coleman Power invertor....I don't remember the specs. I'll post that later with the pics.
Windows XP Pro, Road Runner, Delorme Street Atlas 2006, and a couple more additional apps for testing. The Final load is pending.
My goal is simple. The main use of the system will be for navigation. I have meet a fellow member who is willing to share his skin with me that he made for a Fire Department. So inaddition to the navigation I will also use it for logging in calls that I run. I really have no use for the MP3 aspect since my head unit plays MP3's. However I may go down that road in the future. Right now I plan on mainly playing with the system to see what I can do with it. I do run a small Computer Repair business and alot of the time I carry a laptop with me for doing invoices there at the customers house, so it is possible that my CARPC will evolve further.
The bottom line, I'm a Techie...I have been one for as long as I remember. Not to mention my background as a network administrator for the Marine Corps. So this should be a fun project.
