  • accord coupe with a 12.1" indash, etc...

O.K., this is not my first carpc, I have done many of them through the years, from my first in my caddy coupe over 10 years ago(first win carpc in sig), to my current car, which is being redone for the third time with a dual pc multi-screen networked setup, (not this car, my minivan) BUT, this one will still be a first for me, in the fact that this will be the first carpc that I've ever installed for myself without any headunit, the pc will be SOLE HEAD...

up until now, all my systems have been hybrids of multimedia car audio system, combined with a pc, this is the first time I've ever had to do just a pc as sole entertainment & navigation, so in this, I'm going to try & steamline the system & make it as reliable as I can, & as stable as I can... in the past, if my carpc had any issues or anything, I still had all of my critical stuff like xm, cd & dvd, & navigation, through my alpine, but not here..., this one will be 100% pc based....

the screen I'm using is a 12.1" boe hydis indoor/outdoor panel, in portrait mode... I've done a few of these portrait mode larger screens, & the more I do them this way, the more I like them... it has more screen real estate than 2X 7" lilliputs stacked, & with a custom skin it's just real sweet

the soundsystem will need to be upgraded, I'll put a nice set of components up front & I am planning a single 15" illusion audio sub... this sub, even though it's a 15", it's a special design that uses a front mounted neodymium magnet, it uses a carbon fiber cone, & an aluminum frame... the end result is a 15" sub that is just 4" deep total.....

this sub will be mounted to the deck, the goal is for this to be as shallow as possible, & not take much trunk space at all & the design I am using for this sub is called an aperiodic design.. the whole box will be not much thicker than the sub... this sub install & the screen install will be the 2 main focal parts of this install...

my design requirements are to give up minimal space, as this thing is tiny & doesn't have much space to spare, but to have a really nice system anyway... this is a second car for me & I'm also going to try & recycle most, if not all of this install, from parts I already have laying around....

I'm actually really trying to keep everything relatively simple in this install, the climate control will need to be customized though... the original spot is higher up in the center bezel & it's wide... much wider than ANY point in the lower console area really, so I'm taking it apart & altering it... basicaly the two giant knobs on either side gotta go, relocated & probably reduced in size...because this is an EX model, the climate control is fully automatic already, so no modifications or upgrades need to be done, just relocated & altered for fit only... the last shot is probably where it'll be moved to...

this is a shot of how the screen fits to the bezel, I have already got a spare bezel & started chopping, this screen will be recessed as much as I can, cause that's a great way to help avoid daytime visability issues, & I want it it look as "factory" as a friggin huge 12.1" could look anyway I will need to build custom a/c vents, which will probably be the hardest part of this whole screen bezel really... I don't want to loose anything but the clock in this screen install, so the a/c vents have to be redone... the final shape will wind up being almost a triangle... I would first look to existing vents from existing cars to see if anything can be used for this that is readily available, if not, then either smaller round ones or I'll just have to build them from scratch...

yeah... latest update.... I've been driving this car for a few weeks now... I love it... it's quick, handles well & rides comfortable...

now the bad news... my wife & my mother-in-law hate it... theres just no leg room in the back... for the first few trips we threw mom in the back... but after those little woman discussions they changed up & now my wife gets in the back.. so I wind up with my mom-in-law in the front with me & my wife complaining in the back

I don't know yet how much of a damper this will put on things.... I never intended this vehicle as a weekend car, but it's nice to be able to use either of my cars on the weekend if I had to....

so now to decide.... do i keep this car, go mildly off on it, & then never have to use it with the family, or do I just replace it with something a bit larger... maybe a 4 door.... maybe something that can fit my horns....

I guess to me, fitting the horns & fitting the family carry equal wieght in my decission..... hmmmm.... so far, only waste is a $50 bezel from honda... nothing altered on the car yet...

so at this point, I'm not to sure if I'll do this car or replace it... I'm leaning towards replacing it after the holidays, but I don't know with what yet???

Have you had you wife in the back and measured how much room you need for it to be comfortable? If it's just physically not possible, then you might need to consider swapping vehicles.

Have you considered making the front seats thinner? If you could gain one or two inches of space in the back it could make a big difference.

Keep the car! Think of the gas mileage ... Or the resale value.... anything. Just do the install so that I can copy it in my own car!

sorry, but I think it's going... a friend of mine is driving it this weekend & if he wants it, it's his.... if he doesn't... then I'm not sure what I'm doing really... I guess I might keep it a little while... who knows at that point...

I considered buying another car... even looked at a few caddy's... a dts would take everything I can throw at it, horns, big screens & all... but then I don't want to do that, cause that'll take away part of the purpose of my main vehicle, the minivan. PLUS, that would turn into a bit of a larger project...

right now I'm thinking of doing something else... instead of starting yet another project, I might just work at finishing a few of the projects I've already started & have been neglecting....

I got an old caddy coupe that's all souped up, turbocharged & all.... I want to finish that car.... that'd be a cool car to drive back & forth to work in

I also have a nice custom astrovan with a lot of heavy custom work just waiting to be finished.... if anything, I may be putting a wild custom paint job on that one & do it as a showtruck... but that's for another thread

at this point, I guess we'll see...

yeah, well, so much for that.... the honda is history, it's going to a friend....

& that idea I mentioned about a dts & being able to fit everything I want in it... well, I just couldn't resist this one, here it is... I don't know what the hell it is with me & red cars the past few years..... that crimson red was an special premium paint, like the white diamond pearl white.... she's pretty in person

I figured a caddy would be best for people hauling.
You can still keep it the install simple like you planned with the accord, no need to get crazy.

Oh yea, post a link to the new caddy built so I can follow it as well.

yeah, I'll keep it relatively simple I guess, but since it'll be my favorite ride on the weekends now, it'll need a rear pc for my son... he's really more & more anxious for his pc.... now, every time my wife is in the mall & shopping, my son is in the front seat on the carpc on his pokemon forums rescuing his friends, or whatever it is they do & I'm left playing with my cellphone or reading a magazine

I like kicking ideas back & forth.. I'll start a thread now & we can come up with a plan of attack on this one.......

one thing I can tell you is this one will not be like the montana & drag on forever... this one will be done once & quickly.... I refuse to drive this car in pieces & with crap hanging out all over the place.... I will try to do this one more like a job than a "project"
