  • Andrea Superbeam SoundMAX Array Microphone

Everyone raves about the Andrea mic's, but I'm not sure I want to drop > $300 on a mic. The following mic from Andrea was designed for PC/Laptop use, but I am wondering how effective it would be in a carpc install.

I was not able to find anyone that has used this in a car, but the review I found here gives it high marks for home PC use. It is completely USB powered, so it simplifies installs.

If no one else has experience with it, I think I might be willing to try it out once my G4 comes in, might be a decent alternative for 1/3rd the price of the DA-350.

I own this mic and so does one other guy on here that I'm aware of.

    Two words: Buy it.

Found some more reviews, and they are all as positive as yours. Now I'm wondering where to get it, if it works great in the car maybe they will start carrying it in the store here... I think the store is probably sick of hearing my questions by now but I'm sending them an email anyways

Its being sourced for the store, I have no idea when it will be in stock.

There is a noticiable, but negligable, difference between this one and the $300 one. The USBD-2A is definitly good enough to get rid of most road and car noise.

So, if I read this correctly, you plug the mic into the adaptor, and the adapter into a USB port? You don't have to plug the mic into a sound card or anything else, only the adapter?

This might solve a problem of mine, being that my carPC is in the trunk, and I really don't want to run another cable back to the trunk. I've got a USB hub upfront that I could just plug this into.

The mic comes with a USB sound card. You plug the mic into the sound card it comes with. The noise cancellation will only work with the sound card it comes with.

my asus p5n32 came with the soundmax onboard, as well as one of those microphones. 3.5mm plug into the sound card ... maybe its cheaper to just buy the mic and not the entire usb kit.

Yes its cheaper, but its a stereo mic and your sound card has to support it. It only works with sound cards that are compatible with the andrea driver.

I have this microphone, and I didn't have a great experience in the car.

Don't get me wrong, the microphone is awesome. I have it in my office now and I can sit like three feet away for VOIP and the quality is as good or better than a regular mic directly in front of my lips.

The same was true in the car. Again, at about 18-24",(mounted on the o'shoot handle, then the dash, then the steering column) the microphone worked great... while the car was off and standing still. Add music, road noise and normal vibrations, and the signal-to-noise ratio suffered. While the andrea usb array mic was much better than most, I decided it still wasn't enough for my needs, so I gave up at the time.
