  • Digital TOSLINK to 5.1/7.1 analog converter

I Googled for a bit and found quite a few 2 channel models, but nothing that delivers 5.1 other than something bundled in with fancy expensive headphones.
I'm planning on mounting my MoBo in my glove box and amps in the trunk and I'd like to run optical back to the amps.
Sorry if there is such a product, I didn't find one, and maybe you can link me to it.
    Thanks!

toslink SPDIF AUDIO is ONLY 2 CHANNELS!!
dolby or DTS Encoded audio, can also sent on Toslink via SPDIF

but standard PCM audio is only 2 channels....

you can actually send a few channels via ADAT Lightpipe, but its very expensive

course u could encode your output of pc to dolby, then you would need a decoder at the amps...

    all overkill to me

      Huh?! lol

If it's not really feasible, makes sense why there is no solution yet. Guess I'll just stick to FR/FL RR/RL Cent/Sub analog cables.

      Here's to hoping though!

mitch summed it up really well.

remember almost all music is only a 2 channel source(unless your using SACD's). when you use optical, it will only transmit 2 channels. period. unless you get into special encoders/decoders/etc, it is usually not worth the hassle..

This is my first post but im a long time reader and I am doing this same kind of setup right now... This is my first CarPC and I am putting together a pc with a soundcard (Asus Xonar D2X) that has optical (toslink) out and im using a (older) Alpine Digital Audio Processor (PXA-H510) that I found on a auction site for $200. It has Dolby Digital 5.1 Decoding and has Analog Outputs (Front L&R,Rear L&R,Sub,and Center). I am waiting on my psu case to come in since i cannot manage to get my power supply in my carputer case and cannot wait to play with this thing. In a vehicle I have read that Toslink does not pick up any interference and I have been in the car audio industry for a while and trust me.....no one wants to troubleshoot engine noise. I will post my final thoughts when I get up and fully operational.

you would encode (assuming that sound card cna)... but keep in mind
a mp3... is 2 channel.. and will only and should only play from 2 speakers (front)
car audio is a mess, and always has been with its copy of front audio to rear
course if the material is 2 channel, id bet the pxah510 would play the 2 channel pcm on its 2 front channels... dont know for sure, dont own one
            -Thanks
