  • subs cutting out? i;m not sure why...

ok so im going to be honest i have no clue about the inner workings of car audio. i bought pioneer head unit, a phoenix digital amp, and two pionner 12'' subs already in a box. i took them all to Circut City in the begining of january to be instaled. just resently we had a heat wave and i drove down to the shore going around 80mph in 100+ temperatures with the music blasting almost all the way up i have all the variables like bass boost and the max and min balanced out and the amp is set to LPH. the next day i noticed the bass cutting out. it didnt matter how loud i was playing the music but the subs would jsut stop playing for mabye a sec jsut missing a beat then they would continue to play only to cut out a fw seconds later. it also didnt matter how long i played them for. it didnt seem to get worse the longer they were on. i checked the ground and the fuses and wiring seem to be good. i know its not the subs because i got those checked already. so im afriad i fried the amp tht day and thts why the subs cut on and off. here are the specs

    Amplifier:
    Phoenix Digital Chrome
    Model #PD393 - 2-Channel 1000 Watt Amp
    MAX Bridged: 1000 Watts
    RMS Bridged: 300 Watts
    Dimensions: 11" x 2.5" x 9.25"

    Subwoofer (2):
Specifications for Pioneer TS-W301R 12" 4-OHMIMPP composite cone, urethane surround, 50-150W RMS power range, 20-4000 Hz frequency response Car Speaker TypeComponent, Subwoofer Car Speaker Size12" Nominal Power800 W Passive or PoweredPassive Speaker MaterialComposite, Urethane UPC012562785950

    Headunit:
    Sony CDX-F7710 CD Player

any help would be much appreciated.

I would say you blew the sub. Serves you right for making everyone miserable blasting music all day. Grow up.

Are you missing the deep notes, or is it just skipping at a certain interval?

its not missing the deep notes. it just cuts off for a sec and then will play again. it sounds as if there was bad wiring but i cant seem to find any. thats why i think i fried something. and i hooked the subs up to my frineds car and they work fine on his system so its not the speakers themselves that are malfunctioning

Is there any way you can test the amp on your friends car too? Im assuming you dont have a crossover, just your amp with a low-pass filter? Can you be sure that the filter is set up right?

Sounds like either a bad amp or bad sub.

The amp has an over current and overheat protection. The amp could have been running too hot and fried something. So now the amp is going into protect mode, then checks and comes out of protect mode, etc. If this is the case, bring the system back to Circuit City. You should still have some kind of warranty on it.

If the subs voice coils have blown, then the incorrect current will be running through the amp, and it will again go into protect mode.

Bottom Line: Take it back to Circuit City and have them look at it. They installed it, and it should be under warranty.

Check the terminals on the subwoofer and the wire going down into the coil from the terminals. Also... check your connection on the fuses on your amp. I tore EVERYTHING apart in my isuzu rodeo just last weekend of the sAME problem. It was mostly random .. sometimes it would do it turned down, sometimes it would do it when cranked... it would HIT... then just cut off... then come back on after that note isn't needing to be played anymore.

I looked close at the amp to see smoke by the fuse.. Bad connection, removed it, put it back in tight... problem was gone.

The Remote wire was keeping the power light on and steady on my sony amp so I had no idea it was a +12v power input issue.

                  1. Double Check your connections make sure they're secure-- Especially the ground. Might have came loose with the major thumping.

                  2. Double check if the impedance is hooked up correctly for the subs.

Maybe, check polarities (+/- connections on your input)... is your amp hooked up to the input with RCA cables? try unplugging one or the other while turned up... see if the problem continues. If connected through High level input, switch + / - of each speaker input until the problem goes away.

                    hmm..

guys, I think that the OP is not around anymore. He probably took it back to where it was installed and had them diagnose the problem. Good info though.

I had a similar issue, check all the connections and fuses, nothing was blown, I was stumped. I checked the fuse on the battery again, and found it was not blown, but the connections weren't sound. I replaced the fuse, and haven't had an issue since.

Sometimes with glass fuses, there is a rare condition where the fuse will blow towards the ends of the fuse and not in the center where it is obvious. Also sometimes excessive heat will cause the connections within the ends of the fuse to undo itself in such a way that it still puts out a voltage, but also has an unwanted resistance to cause the amplifier to not perform as it should.
