  • USB extension

The alpine head unit cda-9884e features a full speed usb connection in the back. if i were to add cable to extended the lenght( Female to male usb ends) would it affect the speed or quality of the music or signal it is recieving.

USB is a standard and should work at 5m length away.

Alpine has to go by the standards to call it USB so it would be a safe bet it is okay to use an extension. and you would see no difference.

You really dont have to worry about signal degradation when you are talking about USB. USB uses a digital signal. The most common worries about signal degradation are when you are using analog signals.
The only major worry you may have is the degradation of the power going through the USB when you extend it, such as when you are connecting a device that requires to be powered and doesnt have its own power supply, ie hard drive.

        not true.

it is an analogue signal at its heart, there is no such thing as digital really. And if the length gets too long, that value of 4.9 that indicated a 1 starts to degrade to 2.49 ish and all of a sudden it becomes a 0 when it shouldnt be. This happens over even short runs because not all USB ports are equal even though they need to meet the standard. Cheap parts have an effect on it too. If it is made to work with a flash drive plugged directly into its port, it can use really crappy contacts and connections, then it will still get above the 2.5 volt mark to make a 1 when it should but it wont be 4.99 like using gold contacts, it might be 3.5v or something, so you cant extend it as far.

Also the faster the USB connection the shorter the run. 5m is the absolute maximum without an active cable.
