Personally I wouldn't bother with Boss. They are the bottom of the line for amps.

I'll second that, they should have just stuck with headphones.

i also agree with them, though if you are on a tight budget, and really can't afford a name brand amp, it will work fine, and will amplify sound. but there are better(also, more expensive), name brand amps out there that will will do it better, but are more reliable.

I AM on a budget and just pushing stock speakers in my '05 VW Jetta. I want/need something under $50.00. Anything better for the price? Would this sound as good/better than the stock HU? Thanks for the info!

Oh, and one other thing since I am a COMPLETE noob when it comes to car audio; since the front speakers are split into separate tweeter, mid and woofer...do I need any special considerations when looking for/hooking up an amp to them? Or do they all get twisted together and put on one channel?

            Thanks again!

If you just want it to sound like a HU, you can get any amp really.

There are a lot of unknowns there.

Chances are there is a crossover for those front speakers. There is one signal line that goes to the crossover and that sends the highs to the tweeters and the rest of the audio to the midrange. In that case, you simply run your front channels to the crossover and you are good to go.

Mind you what I described is the most common setup, and may not be how your speakers are wired.

Since you know you aren't knowledgeable about car audio, it's time to learn. I suggest taking your car to someone who is, be it a car audio shop (who will probably charge you), a friend, or someone at a car or car audio show. Have them look at your front speakers and determine what you need.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
                How about the Wiki?

FYI, I ended up going with this one after doing way too much/not nearly enough research. There is a LOT to know about amps!!! $50.00 used on craigslist.

                  •70 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms
                  •140 watts RMS x 4 at 2 ohms
•280 watts RMS x 2 bridged output at 4 ohms
                  •2-, 3-, or 4-channel output
                  •4-ohm stable in bridged mode
                  •Tri-way capable (Tri-Way crossover required)
•requires 4-gauge power and ground leads — wiring and hardware not included with amplifier
                  •PWM MOSFET switching power supply
                  •variable 50-200 Hz high-pass/low-pass crossovers (12 dB/octave high-pass, 24 dB/octave low-pass)
•ThunderEQ bass boost (up to 18 dB at 40 Hz)
                  •preamp outputs
                  •13-15/16"W x 2-1/8"H x 9-3/4"D
