  • [FIXED] Amp wiring problem, sub cuts out and amp goes into protect mode HELP!

    I have a ford taurus 2005 with a p1800.4 (4 channel crunch amplifier) and a Hifonics 12" 12d4 subwoofer in a sealed box, when I first intsalled it, it was fine now it cuts out and amp goes into protect mode, my ground is fine ive tried wiring in bridged unbridged, parrallel series, u named it ive tried it.

    -power wire 8 gauge
    -ground 8 gauge
    1 12" Hifonics sub
    2 sony xplod 5x7 rear speakers (fronts arent hooked up)

    If somebody could please help me out, is there something simple im missing?????

    Are you running the sub and the 5X7's off 2 channels? i.e. stereo drivers and bridged sub? If so, this is probably too much load for the amp...
    That, or you have a bad wiring connection at the speaker/amp...make sure you dont have any frayed wires shorting out.

      i have the sub bridged on one channel (1/2) and the spekaers in channels (3/4) unbridged obviously, connections are fine, I ran a volt meter and when the amp is on and playing its 12.35, its at very low volume of course because it still cuts out. that is normal isnt it, here is a text diagram of the wiring

      Terminal (1/2) (Subwoofer) (*-*)(+)(-)(*+*) <---bridged
      Terminal (3/4) (Speakers) (*-*)(*+*)(*-*)(*+*) <---- single channel mode

      4 channel amp

      any other help? i feel like ive tried all solutions.. I appreciate your responses

        what is the final load of the sub at the amp?

        what have you checked with a dmm?

            You can't run a four channel amp in the configuration that you are trying to run. You can the bridge the four channels to two but thats it, you cannot run it as a 3 channel. This is your problem.

              you have 2 options-- either wire the sub to only the left channel (i have used some small 35x 2 channel amps and subs setup in my brothers cars this way..) (most bass is on the left/mono channel), or get a different amp...

                thewizard, i dont mean to correct you but i had this setup the same in my room and it ran fine and stable, it just does not like my car, it even says and shows diagrams in the amp manual that I can bridge a sub and run the 2 speakers for the 3/4 channels. it is a bridgable amplifier,

                and soundman, ive tried it on just the left channel and it does the same thing cuts out into protect mode, ive even tried it with all terminals without any speakers connected, just the sub was same thing.

                  Easy answer...

                  You didn't match the sub's impedance to the amp's bridged impedance. The amp can drive a minimum of 4 Ohms when bridged. That sub is either a 2 or an 8 and i'm guessing its a 2 if it went into protect.

                    Dual voice coil means you have two 4 ohm loads but depending on how you wire them you either get 1 8ohm load or 1 2ohm load. Take a look here:

                      sorry to be a noob, but this is my first car audio system, i understand basics but this is just killin me for sum reason,

                        I really need to start looking at the model more...

                        RMS Power Rating:
                        4 ohms: 112.5 watts x 4 chan.
                        2 ohms: 225 watts x 4 chan.
                        Bridged, 4 ohms: 450 watts x 2 chan.
                        Dynamic (Peak) Power Rating:
                        4 ohms: 225 watts x 4 chan.
                        2 ohms: 450 watts x 4 chan.
                        Bridged, 4 ohms: 900 watts x 2 chan.


                        Your amp is 4ohm bridged stable, and 2ohm stereo stable, so, as long as you are above these ratings you should be fine. If it is still going into protect,it could be a partially blown voice coil. The easiest way to test this is a another sub...

                          It could go into protect mode due to lack of available power too. Hook up a voltmeter as close to the amp as possible and see what the voltage is doing when the amp cuts out.

                            Holy Crap it was so simple, i smelled the coil and the back of the sub, i think it is partially blown, thankyou so much for your help amp is fine then jsut need a new sub. appreciate all your feedback guys

                              subs don't blow for no reason...make sure its not wired up the same way next time
