  • amps on, subs off?

I've had my system wired for a while now and it just started to go funky on me. Not that much went wrong though, so the problem/answer is weird and I cannot figure it out.

I originally had my amp/subs hooked up through headunit, working. Next, I hooked up a laptop to the amp, and with lpf turned off or on, the subs worked correctly. Next, I took out those subs and hooked up my home theater system sub to the amp with lpf off (I ran this sub so I could run other speakers as well and not have 2 amps). Now, since taking out the home theater sub, I tried to hook up a car sub but without being boxed (I was not going to run it, wanted to make sure it turned on before mounting in my finally done box). It did not turn on, with either lpf on or off, nothing.

I then took everything back to the very first way of installation, before adding anything... headunit, amps, subs. The headunit and amp turn on just fine, all car speakers work, and nothing comes out of the subs, not matter lpf on or not. I was stunned as there was sound going into the amp, as heard by my home theater sub again, but with the normal car subs nothing... I tried 2 different sets of boxed car subs, both known working, and nothing...???

pictures, or diagrams of the setup can really help. otherwise, any suggestions, or ideas are really just a crap-shoot...

also, if you are just connecting them without testing any of the connections, i highly recommend getting a digital multimeter (DMM) to test everything, and verify that everything is setup the way you think it is..

Can't really access paint or anything right now, so I'll write it out here, or at least try.

1st (everything worked): Headunit -> amp -> car subs
2nd (everything worked): Laptop (no headunit) -> amp -> home theatre sub -> other highs/mids
3rd (subs didn't work, everything else did): Laptop (no headunit) -> amp -> car subs
4th (subs didn't work, everything else did): Headunit -> amp -> car subs (2 different sets, neither worked)

You are right, it's hard to suggest stuff to try without proper pictures, which I should have in about a day (camera doesn't charge so have to find one ). I checked/rechecked amp grounds and fuse, but without those I don't think the amp would turn on anyways? I will recheck the headunit -> amp -> home theatre sub when my girl gets off work and the car is home to see if that works.

model numbers, and how everything is connected can also help.

if you have dvc subs, you could have shorted out the wire attempting to attach it to multiple coils..
