  • Alpine CDA117 digital in

Hi all, long time lurker, first time poster.

Have searched but can't find answers.

Just bought an Alpine CDA117 headunit, quite nice. On the back there is a 3.5mm auxilery in port. The manual says its a digital in, and claims you can feed the headunit a 5.1 signal. Unfortunately the manual is light on detail, and I can't figure out if you need an Alpine external decoder or alike.

What I'd like to do is run a usb sound card with digital out from my carputer to feed an un-decoded signal to the headunit. I have a lot of flac and lossless audio files and would love to get the most out of them.

Can any of the learned members of this forum clear up any of this for me?
    1. Can the Alpine CDA 117 accept a digital signal directly or do you need an external unit?
    2. Can that signal come from a usb sound card with digital out.
    3. can a lossless audio format be passed undecoded out of a usb sound card with digital out
    4. will that signal come out in a format that the head unit will be able to decode?

Any thoughts welcomed. It may be a lot of work for minimal benefit, and if so I'll give it a miss.

    Thanks heaps,

    1. You need an Alpine unit to pass the digital signal or something else that talks the same protocol. I believe it's AI-NET. (I could be wrong)
    2. I don't believe so.
    3. I don't see why not.
    4. See #2.
Have you looked in the FAQ yet?
    How about the Wiki?

Under normal circumstances, a signature would go here.

      page 52, and 53 of the manual-- connections 19 & 20.

no. you cannot connect a non-alpine digital audio source to these.
