  • Amp/Subs for alternative/rock/indie/metal enthusiast.

I used to have Phoenix Gold subs with a Soundstream? amp about six years ago when I was kind of into the car audio scene, but after they were stolen I just never replaced them, and have since bought an 04 tacoma. I am thinking about buying one of the speaker cabinets that fit in the floor space of the extra cab back seat, but I have no idea what decent brands are now-a-days. I want to stay right in the 200-400 dollar range, and I would like to get a decent amp (but not have to install a cap) and a pair of 10" subs. Any suggestions?

it might be best to check out some car audio shops. imo, kicker and alpine hit a little too hard for alternative usage. i also have been out of the scene for a while.. i've been meaning to start looking for a decent 12 with similar audio qualities, but other projects are more important right now..

speakers should play all music equally well. If it's tuned and installed correctly you should be happy playing any type of genre.

Speakers should play all types of music well, but unfortunately most car subwoofers are built to accentuate certain frequencies... Most of which are for rap and hip hop and the low lows that they use in most of that style of music. I guess I'll hit the audio shops before I make my decision, I was just trying to find out what brands are known for being reputable and decent sounding.

if you look at the higher end brands, those will do better at playing more evenly, but sound is subjective, and every speaker is built to meet a certain type of sound quality...

well i disagree... the sub enclosure and tuning would have more affect on what you hear.... alternative rock (bass guitar, drums etc.) play the same frequencies as any other music, no? how would a 60hz signal from a techno song be any different then a 60hz signal from a rock song? anyways....

peerless, tc sounds and jl audio, and even dayton all have great reputations. jl has an amazing quality control. peerless has a great reputation for sq. tc sounds has amazing sq but may be out of the $400 budget, jl has many different price points and even there low end stuff sounds pretty good. daytons are great bang for the buck. (i have experience with all of these except peerless)

for amps... you're dealing with lower octaves where you wont hear distortion as easily. plus you're in a noisy car. if you're on a budget then go with something like infinity or blaupunk amp (i believe they are made by the same company... i could be wrong) just get something with enough power to exceed your subs power rating... and tune tune tune.

yes, a 60hz tone from a techno/rap/alt song is the exact same 60hz tone.
but music is not one tone.. music is made up of varying tones at different output levels, and that is the separating quality that we hear.

my crummy kicker cvr's lack delicacy-- either my country songs lack bass, or it sounds like snoop dog edited the bass track, there really isn't much medium ground...

those same songs on a better sub become more country-like. the bass track is there, i can tell it exists, but it doesn't require overpowering to make it audible...

do they not lack delicacy in other types of music though? that is a debate on 'sq', not if a particular speaker is better for a certain type of music.

I fear we are going off topic though.

using rap or anything where there is a hard definitive beat, they don't have any problems. but to take those same levels-- 'i can hear the subs working, and they blend nicely with the mids'-- and then play a alternative, or country track, the subs usually disappear, and then as i fiddle with the gains, become louder then what is needed in the song..

but anyone that has heard most of kickers lineup should remember that they tend to make subs better matched to trunk-rattling then fidelity.

I got some 8" Tang Bangs in my civic... actually, I only have I (hooked up). After testing the system with one, There was absolutely no need for two. I listen to all kinds of music during one ride, and I do have to adjust gain between genre's in order to get a balanced level of low-mids. Its not a problem if you install a gain knob up front.

i have a gain knob, and i am always fiddling with it (because i can), i'm just saying for all-around-sq subs, my cvr's stink, and i feel it is a quality that is reflected across the entire kicker lineup..

yeah; to me, it sound like more of a quality issue. but i could be wrong or right... so im not arguing anymore i think we are getting off of the op topic

did you mean to type 'tang band'
i only have used some 3" full range tang band's but they performed great as well. I'd love to hear the subs

Yes, i do. Here are what I have installed

I might go ahead and power up the second this weekend just to hear what it sounds like. I'm going to have to up the gain to the fronts though. The one sounds great. I had them gained up with a tiny amount of bass boost from the amp... put on some Flyleaf and my chest was pounding.

I love putting on some heavy double bass action (metalica, velvet revolver,..) letting my people hear it in the cabin then taking them to the back. 10 out of 10 didn't notice it at first, they just looked further into the trunk wondering where the subs were hidden. They're all blown away when I point them out and they totally over looked them in the wheel well at the front of the trunk. Then I tell them only one is hooked up and the jaws drop. I put them in a pretty spacious closed enclosure with polyfill. The awesome thing about these paper cones is that they're so light that they sound great at low volume and high volume, they respond instantaniously and are punchy (again great for those double bass solo's).

that happened to me once back in the day. an installer had a vw scirocco? and let me listen to the system. he opened the turnk and there was one 8" eclipse sub in a fiberglass sealed wooden enclosure. I was baffled!
