  • PC Emulator for iPod?

I just finished installing a pc in my '03 Forester and currently I am using a HRT usb dac to send audio to the amplifier.
I plan to install a Alpine headunit/processor combo for all sound processing leaving the pc to serve primarily as a music storage device along with other functions like nav/internet radio/etc.

I was surfing around looking for a way to output the sound from the pc to the head unit digitally and came up blank.

Since almost all new head units come with iPod connectivity/control built in, I was wondering if the PC could be made to emulate an iPod
so that the head unit can access and play music stored on the pc through a USB cable.

    Cheers

this has come up a couple of times, and there really isn't a easy way to do it..

the closest device is car2pc, but only works with certain aftermarket hu's, or stock stereo's..

basically, the hu and the pc are both hardwired to be 'host' devices, and there isn't a way to manipulate them to become anything else. the only workaround is to build a module that is basically the interpreter for each host so that they can understand what each other are talking about..

Even car2pc sends a analogue L/R signal to the PC, not digital and as you said correctly, is compatible with only a few headunits.

If some one could get the pc to emulate the ipod off a dedicate partition on the hard disk it should be big hit with all
the people running a a head unit along with a carpc.
A big plus would be guaranteed universal connectivity with any stereo which supports Ipod control.
