  • 5.1" to stereo + SPDIF

    Here is what I have:
shuttle xpc with onbaord sound with 3 minijack output and spdif output.
in-car entertainment system with stereo input

My entertainment system has a simple stereo RCA input, one left and one right. Usually I will just plug whatever source I have into the stereo input, and my headunit will decode them into front, center, rear, and subwoofer.

If I want to feed sound from my computer into my entertainment system, how do I go about hooking them up ? On the back of the sound card there's three minijack output - FRONT, REAR, CENTER/BASE. Do I just take one minijack output from the soundcard and plug them into the 2 RCA input on my entertainment system ?
Since the sound card decodes and seperate the sound to three minijack, if I only use one minijack, will I lose the sound that is being splitted to the other 2 minijack ?
For example the card splits the sound to FRONT, REAR, and CENTER/BASE. If I only use the minijack for FRONT to connect to my entertainment system, will I lose the sound from the REAR, and CENTER/BASE ? Of I could configure to have all the sound go through the "FRONT" minijack ?

Another question, what exactly is SPDIF ? If my system has digital optical and digital coaxial input, are they compatible ? Is SPDIF the same as a digital optical output ?

Lastly, would i be able to use two output from the sound card at the same time ? For example, would it work if I connect my pc to entertainment system through one minijack output while I use the SPDIF output to connect to another system with optical input ?

I tried to search and have read many threads but still coudln't find what i want to know. Please help !!

    Thanks,
    Clement

    Nice minivan

Your soundcard should have like a "headphone" output or something I think, if it does, that is what you want to use, which soundcard do you have? also, on a sidenote, that is a badass minivan you have!

just configure your soundcard for stereo output only. Then use the front outputs.

        Thanks about the compliment

If I configured my soundcard to stereo and uses the FRONT output, will I still be able to use the SPDIF output to connect to another system with a optical cable ?

Reason is that in my minivan there are two seperate sound system. One for the front, and one for the rear passengers. The front system uses stereo input and the rear system have optical input. That is why I am wondering if I could use the FRONT output for the front stereo system while the SPDIF output for the rear system with optical input.

I would just use the SPDIF interface of the sound card. That way you get all 6 channels with one cable.

SPDIF = Sony/Philips Digital Interface. This is the standard for digital audio interfacing, either by optical or coaxial.

If your system has an digital (SPDIF) optical input and your sound card has a optical output, then all you need is an optical cable.

I very much doubt you can use both the digital and analogue outputs at the same time, but i don't have a shuttle so i don't really no. check your software.

            Most probably. But YMMV.
