  • now some amp questions

i'm a lurker so i have gained quite a bit of knowledge from readin but before i make my purchase i want to know what the really snooty (when it comes to SQ) people think of pheonix gold for amps...and what does # 1200W x 1 @ 4-1 ohms RMS mean...does it mean 1200 at 1 ,2 or 4... also what are your top 5 or so amp companys for SQ? whats a good number for THD? whats good for noise to decibel ratio... and last im getting an id max 12, its rms is 1000 watts and thats what i want to give it. it comes in a 2 ohm and a 4 ohm version and i've been told that 1000 watts at 4 ohms is cleaner than at 2.... is this true...im willing to spend the extra cash for the 1000 watts at 4 ohms but if its pointless then i wont...thank you much..and thanx for the help on the mounting question....

in the past, their high end stuff was good

(edit: just looked at their new stuff for this year...the darlington output stages are some bad *** pieces, McIntosh used those for a while.....that's some quality stuff btw)

    =]

basically on that rating, it means that it will put out 1200watts on one channel no matter what the ohm load on the amp....

I would HIGHLY doubt that rating, but look at the fuse rating and it will give you a better idea

    Audison
    Arc Audio
    JL Audio
    Alpine
    Zapco
    Lunar
HIGH end rockford fosgate (or rockhard prostate as we call it.....lol)

Honnestly, the higher end series of just about any company out there will be good

THD - the lower the better, my arcs run at less than .001% ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE BOARD! They are rated atlike 85 x 4, they will put out something like 175watts per channel and they they won't go above .001% THD until about 160 watts per channel, that's how clean they are....in general <.05% is good

sig to noise >100 is good as well

look at the damping factor as well, a higher number means that it will react more quickly to the changes in the music, as well as the amplifiers ability to control the speaker (in lays terms) (the arcs have a 2000 damping factor, most amps are in the 200 range)

    hope this helps!

lol - I dono, some on here might question that statement....hehe

on the 4 ohm thing....it might - but honnestly, if you get a good amp I don't think it will make much of a difference
