  • JVC single din DVD reciever with built in 3" lcd screen

Okay, I have been trying to figure out how to get my car done without too many mods to the dash, I found this radio, which sprung an idea, yes touch screens are nice, but pricey, and fastly becoming illegal in some places (any screen pointed towards the driver, whether you agree or not, is now attracting attention at night for cops to pull you over, atleast in DC and VA).

So, I found a jvc radio, single din, supports aux in and CD Changer controls, and has a 3 inch screen in the radio face, would there be support for designing software to utilize the screen (it supports AV inputs) on the head units, and controlling the carputer entirely by the cd changer protocal??

I'm not a programmer, so I wont be able to do that, but if there is enough support, someone may volunteer, or am I just on crack

i doubt its possible unless u can map each button on the headunit to work on ur carpc via a controler phidget or something like that

I was actually thinking of using the cd changer protocal, supports back forward, changing cd's (changing sources on the carpc) etc. That would not require mapping the head unit, it would require cusom software on the carpc.

You'd have to figure out the changer protocol, of course, and then you wouldn't really have much in the controls. You'll probably only have Disc +/- and Track +/-. Maybe hold-down the track +/- to get Rew/FF. There's not a lot of options in there..plus, i've no idea how you would interface the two. The changer stuff is proprietary (I believe) and they probably don't post the protocols anywhere..

You'd probably be better off with a mini-keyboard and touchpad hidden away somewhere...

As for the legality of screens. Full-motion video in view of the driver while the vehicle is moving is pretty much nixed countrywide. There probably is stuff on the books about screens, but I doubt it'll go very far, what with all of the manufacturers offering navigation systems factory installed. You'd have quite an uproar if they did that..

why dont u just buy a clarion autopc joyride? it does all that gps is built in and dvd built in. you can add ur navi to a bigger screen and throw the dvd movies on headrests or something. just a thought. i was gonna do the joyride if i didnt do a carpc.
